News from SCV-Newhall Optimist Club - March 2010

Well here we are, marching into March, and to all of our Irish friends, a “Happy St. Patrick’s Day.”
When it comes to the “Green,” all three of the local Optimist Clubs, SCV-Newhall Optimist Club, Greater SCV Optimist Club and the new Canyon Country Optimist Club, were doing that thanks to our recent “Casino Night” that was held at the end of January at the American Legion Hall in Newhall.  All three clubs participated in putting on this event and plan on making it an annual one.  Thanks to all the people attending and for supporting our efforts to making this fundraiser a huge success.  A special thanks to Alan Wykoff for all of his hard work chairing the committee and his committee as well.  Good job all.
Our club is busy getting ready to honor three students for our youth appreciation program which will be held on February 24 at our regular club meeting, will share the names and pictures with you next month.
Up and coming events we are looking forward to: Our annual “Bunco Night” and this is planned for sometime in the spring, date and place to be announced in the April issue.
Bunco night is a lot of fun and we expect a large turnout, so we are asking that you get your reservations in early.  For additional information you can contact Sharon at 661-287-3506.
For those of you who enjoy going to the Farmers Market and getting a great deal on fruits and vegetables and other goodies, please look forward to seeing us at Chesboro Park in the very near future, Sunset Hills and McBean.  Bring your kids and have them take a chance at our “Wheel of Fortune,” where everybody is a winner.  For more information contact Dee.
Our oratorical contest is now being conducted at Le Mesa Jr. High and is still available to students under the age of 16 as of this current school year.  The first leg of competition will be held on April 14 and we will announce the winner of the club contest at that time.  Following that competition they will compete at the next level in May.
The winner of this contest will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship to be used at their college of choice.   For information, please contact Dee at 661-252-7313.
Once again, if you are interested in giving back to your community, join us and find out how your membership in our club can help you do so.
Until next month.
