News from the SCV-Newhall Optimist Club - July 2010

As promised in my last column, our young man William Oh went on and competed in the second elimination round of the Oratorical contest and won.  He now moves on and will compete in Santa Maria at our Pacific Southwest District conference and we will apprise you of the results next month.  Our young lady, Courtney Molina, did not make it but she was a great contender and we look forward to seeing her at next year’s competition.
Please mark your calendars with the date of August 25, 2010.  That night in lieu of our regular club meeting, we will be sponsoring a fundraiser over at Caruso’s Italian Restaurant, 18340 Sierra Highway, Canyon Country.  All monies raised will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for our annual “Light the Night” walk which will take place on October 23.  The festivities begin at 5 p.m. and the walk starts at 7 p.m.  If you would like to join our team and walk with us that night please contact Cathy our Team Captain at 661-296-0782.  Please watch for our flyer, which if you bring it to Caruso’s on that night; they will donate a portion of your bill to us.
There will be flyers posted around town as well.  If you have not participated in this event before, may I suggest that you consider doing it now!  Since it is held on a Saturday night it is a great gig for families and friends to get together and walk.  We will be looking forward to seeing you on August 25 and October 23.
In June we held our annual “Teacher’s Recognition“ night and the first award of the evening was bestowed upon Mr. Jose Malave, a teacher at Le Mesa J.H.S.  Mr. Malave teaches History and English and is regarded as a really great teacher by all his students and his peers.  Sharing the evening with him was his wife and children.  The second award of the evening which signified our “Educator of the Year” award was presented to one of our very own members, Pete Fries, Principal of Le Mesa J.H.S.  This was a total surprise for him since he was told we were only honoring one teacher for the night.
In his role as principal, Pete is admired not only by his teachers and staff, he is adored by all students both past and present.  As an observer I have seen this man in action when he interacts with his students, teachers and staff, and all I can say is how lucky we are to have such a fine educator among us.  Congratulations to both.  Until next month.
