When the blaze erupted in Canyon Country on the afternoon of October 21, firefighters were already doing their best to contain fires in Castaic and Malibu. The crews that initially responded worked 24- to 36-hour shifts for several days in what became an intense wind-driven fire, fueled by some of the driest vegetation in recorded history.
Valencia Teacher Named California Teacher of the Year Wal-Mart today announced that Cindy Pharis, an arts and reading teacher at Valencia High School in Valencia, has been named Teacher of the Year in California in the 12th annual Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club Teacher of the Year program. Pharis was honored at a special surprise ceremony at the school, and in her honor the school received a $10,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation.
Make A Difference Day Supports Many More than 900 local volunteers participated in the seventh annual Make A Difference Day sponsored by the Volunteer Resource Center of SCV. Together they completed 36 projects throughout the valley, putting in a combined total of 4,000 hours of volunteer time. From planting to painting to placemat-making, there was something for everyone.

Valencia Choir Hosts Annual Holiday Boutique On Saturday, December 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., choir students at Valencia High School will be hosting their annual Holiday Boutique to help raise monies for the Valencia High School Choral and Vocal Jazz Program. More than 30 vendors will be in attendance at this public boutique in the Valencia Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) selling holiday goods, crafts and treasures. Choral students will also be singing carols at the boutique and throughout the community.
