Mrs. Summers - Committed to Excellence Congratulations to Mrs. Joan Summers, for being The Magazine of Santa Clarita’s Teacher of the Month for June. I had such a wonderful time visiting with Mrs. Summers and her 2nd grade class. Her students were very engaged in their kite project, and were very friendly to talk to. The classroom was filled with wonderful work, and it’s no surprise that she is very dedicated to her class.

Boys & Girls Club Auction Hits a Home Run-Cover Story What’s more American than apple pie? The answer, of course, is baseball. The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley Foundation pays tribute to this great American pastime at their 37th annual benefit auction. “A Night on the Diamond”, will be held Saturday, June 14 at the Mann BioMedical Park in the Valencia Industrial Center.

Here it is, halfway through the year already. Things have been very busy at City Hall and I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some of our recent activities and give you a preview of what’s coming up.
Youngsters Discover Careers At College of the Canyons More than 1500 students from five to 20 years old converged on College of the Canyons on April 26 for the first Discovering Careers-2008, a hands-on approach to career exploration sponsored by the SCV School & Business Alliance, the William S. Hart Union High School District, all local elementary school districts and business volunteers from more than 40 companies. Many of the students came with parents, swelling the crowd to well over 2,000 participants.
Doing Whatever It Takes City Representative Yolanda Calderón has had such a positive impact on the community and the lives of our youth. Currently, Yolanda works for the City as a Program Coordinator for the after-school and summer programs for the Community Center. For ten months of the year, she coordinates the after school program which includes homework help, indoor and outdoor activities and play, along with supervising a staff of twenty people. SCV 2008 Man and Woman of the Year On May 2, 2008, nominees gathered around at the Hyatt Valencia to await the announcement of this year’s Santa Clarita Man and Woman of the Year award recipients. Several hundred guests attended the dinner gala.
