Valentines Day is the second largest greeting card giving day-of-the-year and probably number one if we accounted for all of the boxed valentines that children give to one another.  Many people buy candy and flowers for the one they love on February 14 as a tradition honoring this day. Yet, the day is named after St. Valentine, a Catholic Priest from the third Century in Rome who was secretly marrying men to the women they loved despite it being outlawed by Emperor Cladius II.

While St. Valentine was imprisoned, it is said that he fell in love with his jailor’s daughter and wrote the first Valentine greeting.  However, he became a Saint not for falling in love himself, but rather for helping others.

To honor the St. Valentines theme of helping others, Gymboree Play and Music wanted to do something to help others as well.  When finding out what the fewest number of donated items are, we found it was underwear and socks.  Since socks are such an intregral part of Gymboree, we are having a “Sweet Feet Party.”  All of our kids will be designing their own pair of socks.  And for every pair of socks our customers create, we will be donating a pair of socks to charity.  Gymboree Play and Music expects to donate several thousand socks to needy families nationwide.  We are also having a celebrity design a pair of socks for us to auction off on Ebay, with all proceeds going to charity.

It’s going to be a lot of fun for a great cause helping needy children.  If you would like to help us be like “St. Valentine” this Valentines season, join us in decorating your own pair of socks and to help us donate socks to charity.  We will be having our Sweet Feet Parties Friday February 9 and Tuesday February 13.
