Most people will tell you that the biggest problem area on their bodies is their abs.  Often times, it’s the first place where people tend to gain weight and one of the last places to lose it.
Many people think to lose abdominal fat, they should focus strictly on abdominal exercises.  Not true.  Keep in mind that your abdominals are part of your core and work in conjunction with all the other muscles in your body.  Therefore, to really get great abs, you have to work the body as a whole and feed it properly.

Here are seven rules to getting killer abs:

1. Do cardiovascular exercise.  Working your abs will certainly help with tone, but you still have to melt away the body fat.
2. Weight train two or three times a week.  Focus on your major muscle groups. This will help you burn fat, gain shapely muscle and speed up your metabolism.  Try working with a qualified personal trainer to help you get started on a customized weight-training program that fits your needs.

3. Eat breakfast.  Mom was right breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This essential meal helps set the tone for the rest of the day.

4. Multiply and shrink your meals.  Eat smaller meals and make healthy, nutritious food choices.  Ideally, you should try to eat every three to four hours.

5. Say goodbye to the soda (even the diet stuff).  To reduce water retention, go for low sodium drinks like iced tea or herbal teas.

6. Stay focused.  Great abs don’t happen overnight, but they can happen.  Be patient and stay positive.
7. Drink lots of water.  Not only is water good for your skin, it also helps keep your system cleansed.  The more water you take in, the less water you’ll retain. Try to get at least 72 ounces per day.

Implementing these seven rules is a great way to start getting those abs ready for summer.  Also, working with a qualified fitness trainer/ nutrition coach can give you the edge you need to make this the best summer ever.  Whether you’re going on a big vacation, getting ready for an upcoming family event or simply ready to achieve your personal fitness goals, Jones Fitness can help.
