What would you do if you knew there was an easy way for you to help your body stay healthy as you grew older?  Most of us would jump for it.  The good news is, there is something all of us can do to help ourselves live longer and healthier lives.  Exercise is the key.  The benefits of an active lifestyle are realized by men and women young and old, but there are several benefits that sometimes go unnoticed.  Now you can discover even more reasons to make exercise an essential part of your life.

1. Regardless of your age, exercise helps control body fat, aids sleep, enhances appearance, helps regulate appetite and promotes emotional well-being.

2. Children who are active, beginning in their early years, are less likely to develop childhood obesity which is a growing problem among school-age children.  If you have children, your example of exercise can have a lasting health impact on them.

3. Women and girls in their teens especially benefit from the bone protection offered with weight bearing exercise, such as walking.

4. Adults who give up the couch-potato lifestyle lower their risk for chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease.

5. It is never too late for older adults to become more active.  Even seniors can build muscle.  Try getting 30 minutes of physical activity everyday.  You’ll soon be the one giving others inspiration to exercise.  You can start getting tremendous benefits from exercise today with a simple workout plan.  Here’s how to start.

1. Gradually build up by adding a few minutes of extra activity daily.

2. The activity doesn’t have to take place all at once.  For example, walking from your car to the mall, raking leaves and walking up stairs can add up to the recommended 30 minutes.

3. Choose activities that you have an interest in, like tennis or karate.

4. Be consistent.  Make a conscious effort to include exercise in your daily lifestyle.

5. Make it your goal to get a total of at least 30 minutes of some sort of activity each day.
