What does running a marathon, going mountain biking and hiking have in common?  They’re physical goals that’ll make you feel like you’re on top of the world once you try them.  The funny thing is, most people will never try anything until they know they can do it.

Training for a goal or physical event does more for your mental and physical health than you might think.  According to a recent study, runners reported that simply crossing the finish line or completing an event gave them an increased sense of accomplishment.  Newcomers and seasoned veterans both agreed that they felt more confident and more powerful in all areas of their lives after completing a race.  They felt stronger mentally and physically and were able to master problems with ease.

If the thought of entering a race scares you, take baby steps.  Everyone you see in a race started somewhere.  Just enter a 5k and walk the whole way.  With commitment and perseverance, you’ll soon find that training for an event will also help you burn calories, decrease your blood pressure and increase your bone density.  You’ll also build some great friendships along the way.

Speaking of good times with friends, 12 Fitness Edge Boot Troopers recently entered the Camp Pendleton Mud Run.  Designed for those who like excitement, camaraderie and mud all rolled into one, The Mud Run is the dirtiest and most unusual event you’ll ever enter.  Fitness Edge Troopers of all ages and fitness levels pushed beyond their beliefs as they ran through rugged terrain, crawled through tunnels, climbed steep hills and much more.  Six miles later, with mud filled boots and sopping wet t-shirts, 10 of the 12 troopers won first, second and third place medals.

How many times have you said, “I’d like to try that,” and never followed through?  How many more years are you going to let go by? Don’t wait till it’s too late to start doing the things you’ve always dreamed of doing.
