Many people call Keratin straightening treatments Brazilian Blowouts due to the popularity of the name “Brazilian blowout.”  The reality is that both products are very different but are in the same category of Keratin based treatments.  The difference is the chemical make up of the products and how they react with the hair.  Each has different ingredients and offers different results.  Brazilian blowout is free of all aldehydes and carcinogens and the results of the treatment fade away after 12 weeks of washing; leaving the hair in its natural state again.

It is not a relaxer but a smoothing treatment that removes frizz and damage.   Brazilian blowout allows the client to see their results right after the service since there is no down time and the hair can be washed that same day.  Keratin treatments contain formalin, which turns into formaldehyde when heated during the blow dry and flat ironing part of the service.  Most of the Keratin treatments have a straightening effect instead of a smoothing effect like the Brazilian blowout.  They do give you a straighter look for longer period of time which is great if that is your goal to have straighter hair.  The down side is you will see curly roots as your hair grows in.  Remember that Keratins and relaxers must be kept in the hair ironed for at least three days while the Brazilian blowout brand can be rinsed out and washed the next day.  For that reason alone Brazilian blowout is the treatment of choice for many.
Relaxers are in a family of their own and permanently change the bonds in the hair, removing the curl and reforming the hair bond to straight.  Once a relaxer is done with either sodium or lye it is not recommended to highlight nor bleach the hair but only deposit color making the hair darker.  With Keratins and Brazilian blowout the hair can be colored and highlighted but it is best to do it before the treatment is done since color penetrates into the hair further.  The Brazilian blowout or Keratin treatments simple coat or act as a protective layer to the hair.
