Raise a Glass to the 9th Annual Sunset in the Vineyard – November 6th An interactive event for a hands-on organization
The Magazine of Santa Clarita is proud to sponsor Sunset in the Vineyard and feature on our cover: Stacey Mayfield, Jeannie Carpenter and Bobbi Welton.
People who are familiar with Assistance League® Santa Clarita know that their volunteers are interested in working closely with and for the families of the Santa Clarita Valley. Whether they are bringing a home-cooked meal and birthday gifts to the residents of the Santa Clarita Convalescent Hospital, or meeting students at the optometrist to help them be fitted for their first pair of glasses, these women want to make sure that needs are being met and families are being supported.
It is not surprising then, that when a special fundraising event was in the developmental stages, members of Assistance League thought it fitting to give participants an interactive experience. Member Jeannie Carpenter, her husband and her brother-in-law graciously offered their homes and vineyard. They then connected with fellow winemaker Nate Hasper (now co-owner of Pulchella Winery) about being a part of creating a unique wine event called Sunset in the Vineyard, where guests are given the opportunity to interact with the winemakers.
Wine writer and business consultant Eve Bushman recently reflected on the early days of Sunset in the Vineyard and some of the details that set it apart.
“I learned that there were many home winemakers in our valley working together. I thought: How cool it would be to get some kind of way to visit them all in one day,” Eve said. “I envisioned a tour bus. The Carpenters and their winemaking friends dreamed of something much more long-lasting – and, not to forget, to the benefit of the families of the Santa Clarita Valley served by Assistance League.”
Sunset in the Vineyard is the only event that represents the SCV Vintners and Growers Association. These are winemakers and grape growers based in the Santa Clarita Valley. Often they are friends, assisting each other in harvest every year and tasting each other’s efforts along the way – from vine to bottle.
What also makes the event unique, besides being the first of its kind in our valley to be held in a private two-home winery estate, is that it is an opportunity for fledgling winemakers to learn more about the craft. Not all wine events have the winemaker available to attend; in contrast, most of Sunset in the Vineyard’s winemakers are present at the event. Whoever is pouring you a sample has most likely had hands-on experience with that wine.
Sunset in the Vineyard began with the Carpenters (Compa Vineyards), Nate Hasper (Pulchella Winery) and five other garagiste winemakers and has grown over the years to include gourmet food artisans and even craft breweries. This year’s artisans include: Alonso Family Vineyards, Bellissimo Cellars, Bobcat Red and Due Nasi, Bouquet Vineyard, Capuano Winery, Compa Vineyard, Copperhill Brewery, CPB Winery, DeRobertis Family Artisan Cheeses, Gagnon Cellars, Golden Star Vineyards, Hoi Polloi Winery, Hundred Vines, Mystic Hills Vineyard, Nuggucciet Cellars, Pagter Brothers, Pulchella Winery, Reyes Winery, The Speakeasy Bakery, Stephen Hemmert Wines, Sweet Beams Ice Cream, VNTBC Nanno Brewery, Whistling Vineyard, and The Culinary Arts students and Instructors at College of the Canyon’s Institute for Culinary Education.
Along with the silent and live auction, Assistance League is excited to announce that there will be a special opportunity drawing because Princess Cruises has generously donated a premium vacation package valued at $2,500! Perhaps you will be the one to cruise through your Sunday afternoon!
Tickets for Sunset in the Vineyard are $85 in advance and $95 at the door. Complimentary valet parking is included.
Assistance League Santa Clarita organized in 1989 by local women, was chartered in 1993 and has grown to 174 members and 51 Assisteens®. A chapter of National Assistance League, it is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, nonsectarian and IRS 501(c)(3) service organization. It is also a 100 percent volunteer-driven organization. All funds raised from Sunset in the Vineyard benefit Assistance League programs exclusively in the Santa Clarita Valley such as Operation School Bell®, which clothed more than 2,500 children in the SCV this year.
