ACS End of the Year Giving

by | Nov 29, 2018 | Community

When I asked past Woman of the Year Nancy Coulter for help in writing an article about charitable giving, I knew she would be helpful. Nancy is the recipient of American Cancer Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award and past ACS Leadership Council president. Nancy shared with me what she did when her kids were little to teach them about giving from the heart, developing compassion for others, and feeling the gratification of donating to help make the world a better place.
Nancy suggests selecting an activity that your family would do together like going to a movie or eating out but rather than go, donate the cost of that activity to the American Cancer Society.  Instead, have a family game night or have the family take part in preparing dinner together. Make the evening conversation about cancer awareness and how your family is making a difference to those whose lives have been touched by cancer. At the end of the evening, have everyone share their feelings about what it means to have taken part in helping to make this a cancer-free world.
With the season of giving upon us, Nancy’s idea enhances the value of making a donation. Choosing a way to actively participate not only creates awareness about cancer but deepens the sense of involvement. We feel a shared sense of commitment to help ACS provide services to cancer patients and to support valuable research.  Being informed is important, and the American Cancer Society’s comprehensive website provides current research, expert information on cancer symptoms and treatments, and support services. This makes it easy to learn and share knowledge with loved ones.
ACS would like to express its gratitude to community members for their generous support. It’s inspiring to have so many volunteers, donors, and community leaders creating a partnership that works toward saving lives every day.  Nancy says, “When we work together, we realize that a solution to a cure is inevitable! This will be a donation you won’t forget and will make you feel really good!”
