Valencia High School Wins Southern California Competition
Valencia High School’s Theatre Department took home first place at the recent Drama Teachers Association of Southern California (DTASC) Fall Festival held at Canyon Haigh School.
Under the direction of Stephen Whelan, the Vikings thespians and theater technicians were judged best among more than 70 other schools to win first place sweepstakes. Many of the other schools participating in the competition are arts magnet schools, charter schools and LACHSA (Los Angeles County High School of the Arts).
Thought the department has won numerous first place awards in 14 years of competition, this win marks the first-time Valencia High School’s Theater Department has won the overall sweepstakes top prize.

New GiveMeGreen! Smartphone App Provides Bicycle Detection at Signalized Intersections
The City of Santa Clarita in partnership with Sensys Networks Inc. is pleased to announce GiveMeGreen! an innovative new smartphone app for bicycle detection at signalized intersections. GiveMeGreen! is the first of many connected and autonomous traveler apps developed by Sensys Networks Inc., the world’s leading provider of integrated wireless traffic data systems for Smart Cities. This initial deployment is a pilot program to improve safety for cyclists and travel convenience for all motorists in Santa Clarita. The initial pilot is deployed at three intersections along the Chuck Pontius Commuter Rail bike trail, parallel to Soledad Canyon Road. The system consists of the GiveMeGreen! smartphone app which allows the bicyclist using the app to be automatically detected up to 300 feet in advance of the intersection. Once detected, the signal applies the normal pedestrian-crossing signal timing function. This will allow pedestrians and bicyclists to use the same signal phase and will not cause any delay for motorists.

Family Promise’s Giving Tuesday
After the cooking, the feasting, the shopping, the football, the napping and then more shopping, Family Promise came up with #GivingTuesday…
To give back to families that are less fortunate they created this day to give back to people in need. “This is our chance to reflect on our many blessings and give back to help those most in need”. Family Promise has helped so many children and adults. “This year we helped kids celebrate birthdays, worked with parents to find jobs, coordinated with churches to provide shelter, teamed up with volunteers to gather donations and shared hope and love with dozens of local homeless children and their families.” With this fundraising initiative, they could follow their mantra to Give Thanks…Give Back…Give Hope.

Interior Design Students Participate in Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Holiday Home Tour
The Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Holiday Home Tour annually embodies the warmth and magic of the holiday season, as the doors to exquisitely decorated Santa Clarita Valley homes are opened to the community in the name of charity and goodwill. For the second time in the event’s more than 30-year history, community partnerships have carried that warmth over to College of the Canyons by granting interior design students the opportunity to create a holiday design. This season, COC students Grace Trinh, Kylie Van Meter, Marlene Beltran, Julissa Hendriquez, and Joy Estrella-Boyland were selected to assist in decorating one of the four homes included in this year’s tour. The group, led by COC interior design instructor Patrick Tremblay, was assigned the Michael and Teri Fox residence in Stevenson Ranch, and asked to incorporate the theme “Holiday Magic” into its final designs.

Main Street is Lit!
Light Up Main Street is the unofficial kickoff to the holiday season in Santa Clarita and brings community members together to enjoy festive performances, activities and more. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy real snow on Main Street, see live reindeer up close and visit local fine craft vendors to discover one-of-a-kind gifts for the holidays. Children also, could take a photo with Santa Claus and get their faces painted during the event. Food trucks were on site selling sweet and savory options for dinner and dessert as well. At 7:30 p.m., members of the Santa Clarita City Council officially turned on the lights and illuminated overhead displays along Main Street as well as a 23-foot-tall Christmas tree in front of Old Town Newhall Library.

The City Replaces Streetlights
The City of Santa Clarita began to replace streetlights attached to traffic signals and intersections on Monday evening, November 5. Existing high-pressure sodium light fixtures were replaced with brighter and energy efficient Light-Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures throughout the City, which lead to improved visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. The first phase of the project replaces the highway safety lights located in half of all intersections in Santa Clarita, enhancing lighting for crosswalks located in signalized intersections. Work took place in the evenings between 8:30 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. to limit impacts, and was completed on November 14.

Santa Clarita Transit Offered Free Rides on Election Day
On Tuesday November 6, 2018 Santa Clarita Transit offered free rides on local and commuter routes, as well as its Dial-A-Ride service to encourage voter participation. With every election, ensuring that the highest number of voters possible make it to the polls is a top priority. This General Election is no different. With some important ballot measures at stake, Santa Clarita Transit, along with countless transit agencies across the nation did their part to make voting more accessible. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that transportation barriers were a deterring factor for more than half of non-voters in California’s 2016 elections. Voter turnout in LA County’s primary elections in June was a mere 28 percent. The free rides were offered to increase turnout by making it easier for citizens to get to the polls. Free rides were available throughout the entire day on local and commuter routes.

West Ranch High School to “Plant” 1,000 Red Poppies for Armistice (Veteran’s) Day
To honor the 1,000 Californians that were killed during World War I, West Ranch social studies teachers and students “planted” 1,000 red poppies on the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day. In other countries, like Great Britain, the red poppy is used to commemorate the end of World War I (Armistice Day). Hence the red poppies. The poppies pictured were not actual poppies but home-made poppies that the students and teachers of the high school had been working on for weeks.
