Road to Recovery Partners with Lyft
Every day cancer patients need rides to receive treatment or attend cancer-related medical appointments. Ideally, they would have friends and family members who are available to take them. But this is not always the case. Caregivers may work, and patients may not be able to drive themselves. The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program provides rides to patients who have no other way to get to their cancer treatment.
Through Road to Recovery, ACS provides transportation services across the country. Depending on patients’ individual needs and what’s available in their area, ACS will coordinate a ride with an American Cancer Society volunteer driver. If a volunteer is not available, a ride can be provided through a local organization that agrees to provide transportation. ACS is proud to announce that it has recently partnered with Lyft to provide transportation in the event that an ACS volunteer is not available.
To participate in Road to Recovery, patients should call the ACS toll free number 1-800-227-2345 and speak to a representative. It may take several days to coordinate a ride, so patients are requested to call in advance of their appointment date. Some eligibility requirements may apply such as needing to accompany a patient who cannot walk without help or is under age 18.
The Lyft partnership will help fill the gap when an ACS volunteer is not available to assist a cancer patient, but it’s preferable to have ACS trained volunteers be transportation assistants. They fill a vital role because treatment can’t work if patients don’t have access to it. If you would be interested in donating your time to perform this important service, ACS needs you. For information about becoming a volunteer go to cancer.org and search “road to recovery.” Be the driver who gives patients a much-needed lift!a
