What is COPD? How serious is it exactly?
COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema and bronchiectasis. These are the major breathing diseases that cause airways to become “obstructed” or blocked. They often occur together but they can also occur separately. COPD is a progressive disease that gets worse over time.
COPD is the third leading cause of death in the United States. More than 30 million people in the U.S. suffer from the disease. The leading cause of COPD is smoking. Other risk factors may include exposure to occupational dusts and chemicals, and second-hand smoke.
COPD is a serious disease that can affect every part of your life. Even with the simple activities such as walking or getting dressed can be major challenges. COPD can cause coughing that produces a large amount of secretions, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and other symptoms. Having flare-ups, or worsening symptoms, the main reason for hospitalizations in people with COPD, can further affect your quality of life.
If you have been diagnosed with COPD, you can still be healthy. By understanding your disease, and taking charge of it on a daily basis, you can improve your quality of life.
Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital has an educational program that provides information and tools to help you understand COPD, manage treatment and improve your well-being. In a two-part series, participants will learn how to:
• Prevent symptoms and take medications
• Manage breathing and save energy
• Manage stress and anxiety
• Adopt and maintain a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle
• Develop and integrate a plan of action into your life
These free classes are held at Henry Mayo Fitness and Health, 24525 Town Center Drive, Valencia. To register go to henrymayo.com/classes or call 661-200-2300.
