A Lifetime Filled with Passion
Ms. Kathryn Spula, a born optimist, has been teaching at Placerita Junior High School since 1986. “My goal as a music educator is to inspire my students to reach their full potential in music making and in life; to experience the thrill of excellence and accomplishment! Music means a lifetime of JOY!”
She is an award–winning Educator with 37 years of teaching experience in all areas of music instruction. Kathryn Spula is currently Director of Music at Placerita Junior High School in Newhall, California. She will be retiring at the end of the 2018-19 school year. Under her direction, the Placerita Junior High School Bands, Orchestras and Choirs consistently receive superior ratings at music festivals and competitions throughout Southern California.
Ms. Spula has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout her career. She was selected as Teacher of the Year at Placerita JHS in 1989, 1996, and the year 2000. She has received The Certificate of Merit Award: “Recognition of Distinguished Performance in Undergraduate Teaching Experiences” (1980), The Masonic Lodge Award for “Recognition of Outstanding Achievement and Meritorious Service to Public Education (1989), The Bravo Award (1990), SCV Optimist Club Award (2008).
She remains active in assisting and promoting the growth and success of new teachers by serving as mentor for teachers enrolled in the Hart District Induction Program and for students majoring in Music: CSU@Northridge, CSU@Bakersfield and the Master’s University.
A Farewell Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7 at the Hart Auditorium in Newhall at 7 p.m. The outstanding ensembles consisting of the Placerita Intermediate and Advanced Bands, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra and Chorus along with the Hart High School Wind Ensemble will be featured on this unique and special concert program. A debut performance, “Always in the Music” commissioned by Robby Good, former student and composer will be an extra special highlight of the evening!
