America’s Greatest Cycling Race Is Rolling into the Santa Clarita Valley
On Saturday, May 18, the Amgen Tour of California rolls into Santa Clarita for the final stage start of the seven-day professional bicycle race. Billed as America’s greatest cycling race, the Amgen Tour of California is a Tour de France-style road race that features the world’s top professional cycling teams. The 2019 race includes a men’s race and women’s race and starts in Sacramento and concludes in Pasadena, covering more than 800 miles. The teams chosen to participate have included Olympic medalists, Tour de France contenders and World Champions.
Santa Clarita will be hosting the Stage 7 Start of the men’s race and the Stage 3 Start of the women’s race at Town Center Drive at the Westfield Valencia Town Center. Starting at 8 a.m., the public is invited to attend this free and exciting event for a chance to stop by exhibitor booths, get autographs from riders and watch live interviews up until the riders depart on the nearly 90-mile course to the overall finish at the Pasadena Rose Bowl.
The women’s riders will depart at 9:25 a.m., with the men’s riders leaving Town Center Drive at 10:10 a.m. This year the course will see the riders and support vehicles racing through large thoroughfares in Santa Clarita on their way east to Angeles National Highway. While fans are encouraged to enjoy the festivities along Town Center Drive, there are several fantastic viewing spots along the route. Riders will race up McBean Parkway, east across Copperhill Drive, north on Bouquet Canyon Road, east on Vasquez Canyon Road, and then connect from Sand Canyon Road to Soledad Canyon Road east out of town.
Local roads along the route will be impacted during race day and residents in the affected areas are advised to avoid travel between 9:10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to avoid any delays. The closures related to the race will take place as much as 10 minutes before riders arrive, and should be opened after riders pass. Cross traffic will also be allowed as deemed safe by Sheriff’s deputies and road crews.
