Santa Clarita Veteran Services Collaborative Update and Exciting new information
As we head into our fourth year serving the Santa Clarita Veteran Community there are lots of great things happening as we expand our membership and our activities. First off, we are announcing that as of April 1st (not an April Fool’s joke) we are expanding our VSO service beyond the first three Saturdays of each month. In addition to the wonderful assistance to veterans provided by our VSO Joe Sapien, we are now adding Monday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon to our weekly availability, with a three-man rotation of trained benefit volunteers. Additionally, on selected Mondays we will have the service of Anthony Simpson, the Supervisor of the DAV Veteran Service Officers, who will be present at our Veteran Center from 9a.m. to 2p.m. This is certain to help relieve the long Saturday lines that have been prevalent.
Our monthly meetings continue to draw large crowds, and now there is a 50/50 drawing each month, so some lucky member walks away with a few bucks.
The second big item is the Backpack Walk which will take place on Saturday, May 25, and includes a nicely put together meal from the Tommy’s Hamburger truck for all participants. Of course, if you don’t want to walk the three-mile course you can just drop by and cheer everyone on and have a great Hamburger or Chili Burger. Entry fee is $30 (including the meal) or for just the meal, $12. There will also be lots of prizes for entrants, and a gift bag for all.
Tickets and Tommy’s burgers are selling quite briskly thus far, so drop by the Veteran Center any day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and purchase a tax-deductible entry ticket or two. The Center is at 23222 Lyons Avenue in Newhall.
And, while you’re there, take-a-look at over-100 biographies on our “Warrior’s Wall.” The 11x17 framed bios are a draw for all who stop in, and if you are a veteran whose history is not on the wall, let us make it happen… free, of course.
This is also a great location to partake of our food pantry every week day, or use a computer, or grab a book from our library.
Interested in joining the collaborative? Drop by our monthly meeting and see what we’re up to. We meet on the third Friday of every month at 11:30 a.m. in room 301 of the University Center, located on the campus of College of The Canyons. Join us for a complimentary lunch (served every month to all in attendance) as we talk about ways, as a group, to improve the lives of our veterans.
