Special Olympics 2019 SCV Spring Games
It’s almost time for the 17th annual Spring Games hosted by Special Olympics Santa Clarita Valley. On Saturday, May 18, 2019, more than 600 Special Olympic athletes will compete for gold in basketball, track and bocce. The games draw Special Olympic athletes from Antelope Valley, Glendale, Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, Tri-Valley and Ventura County. The public is invited to attend this free event and fill the stands with Fans-in-the-Stands to cheer on the athletes as they compete.
The 2019 Spring Games will begin on Saturday morning with the Opening Ceremony at 9 am at Hart High School Track. The ceremony includes the traditional Parade of Athletes, the dramatic arrival of the Flame of Hope®, and the lighting of the cauldron, which signifies the official start to the Games.
“This is the opportunity for our athletes to showcase their skills. If you are looking for a meaningful family event, plan to join us and experience the true meaning of sportsmanship.” said Laura Mayo, Assistant Vice President, Special Olympics Santa Clarita. “These games are a great community event.”
Special Olympics has 24 teams competing in basketball at three locations; Hart High School, West Ranch High School, and Boys and Girls Club, bocce is held at Newhall Park with 22 teams signed up and track will be at Hart High School with approximately 150 athletes competing in track and field events. Gold, silver, and bronze medals and ribbons will be presented as the competitions are completed. This event is made possible with the help of 400 volunteers and with generous contributions from individuals and sponsors.
