Why Your Trash is not Safe, Secure, Private or Confidential
Our digital world has done little to protect our information that we see on a daily basis in our mail or when we choose to print confidential information we receive by email. Often times, our medical billings and information is still sent to us in hard copy formats for our review and handling.
Bank statements, insurance billings, mortgage information, prescription receipts, credit card offers and more; you get the idea. All of our personal data is often exposed in some form on a daily basis.
So, what do we do to protect ourselves? Our first step might be to “just throw it all away”. Most of us have learned that this is not secure and certainly not the safest way to protect ourselves from identity theft or other nefarious actions that can cause us unnecessary time and energy to correct.
Our second option might be to shred it first using our in-home shredder; this is certainly a step in the right direction. By reducing the information to small, more difficult to read information, we would be at least providing a challenge for anyone looking to do us harm by stealing our information. Then what do we do with the shredded material? Should we throw in into our trash can? Certainly, no one would go through the trash to gain access to our private data. While the likelihood is reduced, the fact is that the contents of your trash can are not private. It is if the cans are up next to your house but if the cans are on the curb and out for collection, then the material inside is considered “abandoned” and anyone can go through them. Note, there are legal considerations here and you can look into the topic further but past court rulings have deemed the contents to be public property.
So, what to do? Be cautious and eliminate all the options where and when possible. There are services available that will take un-shredded paper and destroy it for you or even take your already shred paper and confirm the further destruction beyond recognition.
You likely have talked to a friend, a relative or even told the story yourself about the effort and time it took you to recover from your or their stolen private information. Using a service to ensure the destruction is a significantly less effort to maintain your piece of mind if not just your pieces of information.
AVM Technologies and our “Drop Off Paper Shredding” services help residents and businesses throughout Santa Clarita and Southern California maintain the security and confidentiality of their information, no matter the volume. For more information please call 661-775-2620.
