A Universe of Stories Awaits You This Summer at Your Santa Clarita Public Library

by | May 28, 2019 | Community

This Summer, blast off on an adventure full of epic stories and events at your local Santa Clarita Public Library branch with the Summer Reading program. Each year, the free summer program invites library readers of all ages to participate in reading challenges, attend themed programs and events, and log their activities online to be entered to win prizes. This year the Summer Reading program returns with the theme “A Universe of Stories” and will run from June 10 through July 27, 2019.
The main goal of the program is to help prevent learning loss which has been shown to occur amongst children and teens who stop reading and studying during the summer break, also known as the “summer slide.” The White House has reported that reading just five books during the summer can help prevent learning loss.
To participate, all you need is your Santa Clarita Public Library card to register online at SCVSummerReading.com. Once you are signed up, you can use the website to share book reviews and log completed challenges such as the “Five Book Summer Challenge,” which asks participants to read five books, magazines, audiobooks or eBooks. In addition to online fun, multiple free events and programs will be held at all Santa Clarita Public Library branches located in Valencia, Canyon Country and Newhall.
The Santa Clarita Public Library has what you need for your next adventure – even if that is into deep space! For the explorer in all of us, visit your local library branch for space and science-themed activities being hosted for children, teens and adults. Children will have out of this world fun creating magnetic slime, building their own Mars Rover-like parachute drop and making light-up wands using simple circuits. Teens can try their hand at creating their very own galaxy themed soap or bath fizzers, or crafting a galactic painting using black light art. Adults can also join in the fun by attending a free workshop to learn how to embroider their very own star constellation cloth, build a miniature world with a terrarium and create and take home a nebula bubble pendant.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the Moon Landing 50th Anniversary Party taking place at the Valencia Library on Monday, July 15, 2019. The historic moon landing will be celebrated with videos of the landing, era appropriate snacks, games, virtual reality moon walks and other moon-related activities. Closing off the program will be the Stellar Finale with Guest Performer BubbleMania! on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the Old Town Newhall Library. This family-friendly event features games, crafts, story times and a bubble show by BubbleMania!
