SRD-Straightening Reins Corner – August 2019
SRD-Straightening Reins Foundation, an Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy not-for-profit in the Santa Clarita Valley, was recently awarded a $24,000 grant from the Foster Family Foundation to be utilized for core support of their program because of the success stories that have occurred with previous foster youth.
The Samantha Rocha Dyer – Straightening Reins Foundation (SRD) was established in 2011 to improve adolescent and teen mental health and well-being by utilizing the horse as a tool. Mental health issues in children and young adults are growing daily in crisis proportions. Deborah Rocha, the founder, receives continuous calls from families in distress whose children need support and referrals.
Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) incorporates the use of horses to facilitate positive long-lasting behavior changes such as self-esteem and personal confidence, communication and interpersonal effectiveness, trust, develop healthy boundaries and group cohesion. A horse’s sensitivity to nonverbal stimulus gives them an amazing ability to read people and reflect the child’s emotional state.
(EAP) work can assist a child to make changes and grow more effectively especially when the child is not responding to traditional forms of therapy. Life lessons can take a deeper root when children both understand them in their heads and experience them in their bodies while working alongside a professional licensed therapist and a certified equine handler.
A grant was also received from the Sunair Children’s Foundation to provide professional philanthropy oversite and assist the SRD Board in expansion and further development of the strategic plan to improve mental health in youth.
