American Cancer Society Local Hotel Partners Program
Each year, according to the National Cancer Database, 210,000 cancer patients in the U.S. travel over 40 miles to receive treatment. If health limitations prevent them from driving long distances in one day or if patients are receiving daily treatments, they must arrange for overnight accommodations. This can mean added emotional and financial hardship for patients and caregivers who are already feeling vulnerable and apprehensive. The American Cancer Society, in cooperation with hotels across the country, has created the Hotel Partners Program which provides overnight accommodations for cancer patients who must travel for outpatient treatment. Extended Stay America Hotels is the largest national partner and began partnering with the American Cancer Society in 2013. Since then their program has donated over 120,000 hotel stays for more than 15,000 patients throughout the U.S.
Recently, through the good will and generosity of five local hotels, the Hotel Partners Program has expanded in Santa Clarita to provide lodging for cancer patients receiving treatment in the Santa Clarita Valley. The first to participate in the program was Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Valencia. General Manager Karina Winkler says, “We appreciate the opportunity we have in partnering with ACS while contributing to our community. We take an active role in providing cancer patients with comfortable hotel accommodations during this difficult time.” Other SCV hotels that are now participating are Residence Inn by Marriott , Courtyard by Marriott, Fairfield by Marriott, and Hampton Inn by Hilton. Area sales director Desiree Wammack says, “At the Residence Inn, Fairfield, Courtyard, and Hampton Inn here in Santa Clarita we understand the importance of feeling at home. We are proud to support the community and provide a home away from home for cancer patients undergoing treatments.”
This program helps to reduce one of the barriers to receiving care so that patients can focus on getting well. One Hotel Partners Program guest stated, “Having the complimentary hotel room was the difference between being treated or not; it meant everything.” Cancer patients who may be eligible for this service should contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 for information about requirements, reservation availability and restrictions that apply.
