Simplify in a Single Step
Simple, minimalist living may be trendy, but it can be difficult to take that first decluttering step. Begin a new clutter-free life with this one tip. Start with the closet and then carry on in the rest of the home!
Closets offer great potential for simplifying and minimizing, but how do you start the process? Should you read a book on organization? Follow a blog or Instagram page full of beautifully lit photos of well-curated homes? Nope, just grab a box and get started!
Place a box at the bottom of your bedroom closet or storage space. Over the next six months throw every piece of clothing that doesn’t fit well, is broken (i.e. zippers, elastic), is a duplicate, or has lost its thrill in the box. At the end of six months, go through the box and see how many of those items you want to use or fix. We are guessing there will be few, if any.
That being said, it can still be difficult to part with such items. So, if you need more time to say goodbye, take an extra step: pack up and box the items you suspect you can live without. Clearly label the boxes with what is inside or take a photo and tape it to the outside of the boxes and/or keep the photos in your phone in a file named “Do I Want This Stuff?” Place the boxes in storage, and set a reminder to go through the boxes in 6 months.
At the end of the six months, retrieve the stored boxes. Any items you didn’t even notice were missing for six months don’t need to return to your home. Send them on their way to a friend or charity and return to your cleaner, simpler, more organized home!
