Zonta’s Technology Scholarship
Ivonne Lopez, a College of the Canyons (COC) student, was awarded a $1,500 Women in Technology Scholarship on August 14, 2019, the first of its kind offered by Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) and Zonta International (ZI). In keeping with society’s advancing technology, ZI has created this scholarship to encourage women to pursue careers that support technical achievement world-wide.
Ivonne’s educational goals are to obtain her Accredited Associates Degree from COC, and pursue a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Computer Science. She states she has “structured her professional goals to be organic and flexible to change”. She wants to be involved in a number of projects and accumulate knowledge to truly make a difference and pursue a life goal to combat climate change.
Ivonne plans to develop software for the public education of energy consumption, develop robust predictive software using machine learning, help develop more customized software for collaborative research, and use data analytics to optimize the efficiency of sustainable energies such as wind, tidal, geothermal, solar, nuclear, etc. The algorithms are limitless!
Ivonne is Secretary for the Master Engineering Science Association and she is starting a campus club that through fundraising will help girls obtain an education in underdeveloped countries such as the Girl Rising Foundation. Today, Girl Rising – through mass media campaigns and community-led partnerships – uses storytelling to inspire girls to create a different future and bring people together in a shared mission to create transformational change in the way girls are valued.
Zonta Club is proud to honor this vivacious young woman with this scholarship as she journeys through her education and life’s goals. Ivonne’s application will be forward to Zonta District 9 for consideration of $2,000 and a potential $8,000 award from Zonta International – a total of $11,500.
