October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
16 years ago, the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center, a service of Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, opened its doors. The only facility of its kind in the Santa Clarita Valley, it was created through the experience of breast cancer survivors, patients and their families.
The Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center was designed with a patient’s physical and emotional needs in mind, and was named in memory of Sheila Regan Veloz, a staunch supporter of Henry Mayo’s Breast Cancer Awareness Program. Her fundraising efforts and indefatigable spirit inspired many to help take up the cause. When Sheila passed away from breast cancer in 2001, a generous donation from her husband, the late Tom Veloz, and funds seeded through the efforts of Wayne and Dianne Crawford and Don and Cheri Fleming via the Crawford-Fleming Golf Invitational, helped open the center in her name.
The center is accredited for mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided breast biopsy and breast MRI. It also now offers Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS) for screening patients with dense breasts. Dense breast tissue can often obscure cancers on a mammogram, and research indicates dense breast tissue is the leading common risk factor for the development of breast cancer.
The best available tool for breast cancer detection continues to be the mammogram. The Breast Center uses state-of-the-art Genius 3D digital mammography, an FDA-approved system that detects 41 percent more invasive breast cancer and reduces false positives by up to 40 percent, which translates to early detection.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated in October at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. A variety of local vendors are supporting the center this month by holding fundraisers in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness (please see accompanying Calendar of Events).
The Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center does not require a physician’s referral or prescription for routine screening mammograms. Options for underinsured patients are available. The center is located on the hospital’s campus at 23929 McBean Parkway, Suite 101, Valencia, and appointments can be scheduled by calling 661-200-1099.
