Making Wellness a Priority – SRD-Straightening Reins Corner
SRD-Straightening Reins has been hosting a class from the Sequoia Junior High School for the past five years. Sarah Gilberts, LCSW, PPS, CWA, from the Hart School District, has been supervising the teens’ visits to the Ranch during this time. The collaboration began as an effort to teach the students to become more open minded, authentic, respectful of themselves and others and to experience compassion and empathy while working with the animals.
Data collected each semester was based on anecdotal student quotes and the Hart District collected outcome measures based on student functioning, academics, attendance and behavior. Gilberts noted that results from the visits showed improved mood management and healthier coping skills with the students attending the program.
Gilberts went on to state that she noticed the students learned more team building skills and there was positive cohesion amongst the entire class and a formation of trust between those that participated in the visits. One student wanted to continue to volunteer at the Ranch after the semester ended.
Gilberts has now been asked to develop the new Wellness program at Canyon High School that will be implemented throughout the Hart Union School District. As the program is designed SRD-Straightening Reins has been invited to bring their ranch animals to several of the schools on a weekly basis. Moving forward and creating the school visitation program, more information will be collected to identify the benefits of that program.
Come and visit SRD Ranch, at the open ranch the first Saturday of the month from 11am to Noon or the first Monday of the month from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. www.srdstraighteningreins.org or contact Deborah Rocha at 661-803-1641. An Open House for Volunteers will be held on November 2nd from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
