A Monthly Message from Mayor Marsha McLean 2019 – Year in Review
The City of Santa Clarita continues to be a forward-thinking city, providing residents with the resources and amenities that make Santa Clarita a great place to raise our families. 2019 was a year that did not disappoint in achieving that goal. From new pedestrian bridges and an all-inclusive playground at Canyon Country Park to seeing staggering reductions in crime and traffic collisions, this year was filled with success and progress.
Continuing into the final year of the 2020 Strategic Plan, we are making headway on major projects within our great City.
The new Santa Clarita Sheriff’s station is taking shape, with the 180-foot communications tower in place and the rebar layout ready for the concrete foundation to be poured. By early 2021, our amazing deputies will have a new home that provides the space, technology and resources they need to continue protecting our City and our residents. Thanks to their diligence, vigilance and dedication – 2018 wrapped up with the lowest crime rate on record for the City of Santa Clarita- a 20% reduction in part one crimes from 2017. The final numbers are not in yet, but 2019 is on track to see an additional 25% drop in part one crimes. Our deputies are accomplishing this through special operations, directed patrol tactics, targeted traffic enforcement, specialized deployments, the apprehension of suspects and public education and awareness efforts.
The new Canyon Country Community Center is also underway. Site prep has been completed, which included the installation of a water infiltration system and improvements made to the storm drains and the Mint Canyon Channel. In the upcoming months, we will see the physical building take shape and look forward to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening in early 2021.
Many of the projects completed in 2019 were focused on getting our residents where they need to go safely and efficiently. The new Sierra Highway Pedestrian Bridge, located at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Golden Valley Road, is helping cyclists and pedestrians alike to get across a major roadway safely and away from traffic. We also celebrated the completion of the Newhall Ranch Road Bridge Widening Project. With the addition of two travel lanes in either direction, a raised median, protected sidewalks and a parallel bike trail, the project provides increased travel solutions for commuters, cyclists and pedestrians.
Moving into a new year, I am looking forward to what we as a City will accomplish in 2020. To learn more about Santa Clarita’s 2020 Strategic Plan, visit SantaClarita2020.com.
