From Pinup Girls to elected officials our veterans felt very appreciated.

Smokey the Bear Turns 75

The U.S. Forest Service– with Southern California Edison, City of LA, LA County Parks, California State Parks, and the Corps Network — are celebrating Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday and Smokey’s vital fire safety messages to youth and their families across Southern California. As one of the world’s most recognizable characters, Smokey’s image is protected by U.S. federal law and is administered by the USDA Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters and the Ad Council. Despite the campaign’s success over the years, wildfire prevention remains one of the most critical issues affecting our country. Smokey’s message is as relevant and urgent today as it was in 1944.

Giving our Teens a way to “Start Smart”

To address the problem of vehicle collisions as the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, the California Highway Patrol offers a free educational program called “Start Smart” to help recognize and eliminate high-risk teen driving behaviors. The two-hour class engages newly licensed teen drivers and their parents or guardians while addressing high-risk driving behaviors observed every day by CHP officers. “Start Smart” is conducted throughout the state at no charge. Within the first two years of driving, a teen’s chance of being involved in a collision is at a lifetime high.

Fashionably Scary

Five College of the Canyons interior design students won the People’s Choice Award at the International Interior Design Association’s LA Haunt Couture show. Held at Avalon Hollywood, the competition fuses fashion, design and architecture while challenging designers to create and construct inspiring haute couture fashion from interior design materials. Abigail Ornelas, Rachel Provencal, Jesse Franco, Kimberly Meza, and Melanie Ornelas worked together to create a couture design portraying the symptoms of claustrophobia. Judged by former “Project Runway” contestants the competition included nine large interior design and architecture firms and three schools. The college was the only two-year school competing.
