Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley
Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) was honored by the City of Santa Clarita at the November 12, 2019 City Council Meeting as Mayor Marsha McLean presented a Proclamation to members in honor of Zonta International’s (ZI’s) 100 years of empowering women and girls through service and advocacy. “Zonta Says No to Violence against Women” is a ZI worldwide campaign that transitions from awareness to action. A banner hung near City Hall on Valencia Blvd. pedestrian over-cross and the entrance to City Hall became orange as it was lit with orange lights from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. to remind everyone to “say no to violence to against women”!
ZI became a reality on November 8, 1919 in Buffalo, New York when a small group of pioneering women came together with a vision to help all women realize greater equality while using their individual and collective expertise in service to their community. ZI is a non-governmental organization with prestigious general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Since 1923, ZI has provided more than $40.9 million to empower women and expand their access to education, health care, economic opportunities and safe living conditions. Nearly 1,200 clubs support local and regional initiatives in 63 countries worldwide.
Zonta Club of SCV provides hands-on service to improve the lives of women and girls. Scholarships and community grants are offered that benefit women and girls locally. Service programs support empowerment- Girls’ Robotics teaches girls eight to 14 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills as they build and operate lego robots; LifeForward monthly workshops are designed to empower and provide self-sustainability to women and Stemming the Tide of Human Trafficking mentors at-risk populations of girls.
“Thank you, City of Santa Clarita” as Zonta members continue their efforts to empower women and girls.
