Super Bowl LIV will be upon us before we know it. The game is scheduled for February 2, 2020, and teams across the NFL are already making moves to get there.
For the true football fan, what follows is an insider guide to the upcoming Super Bowl. There is plenty of season remaining, but in the end, only two teams will prevail. In just a few short months, the American Football Conference champion will face the National Football Conference champion for the 54th Lombardi Trophy. Here’s all you need to know to get ready.
Super Bowl LIV Details
This year’s Super Bowl will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. This is the 11th time the city of Miami will play host to the NFL’s premier game. The game is set for Sunday, February 2, which also happens to be Groundhog Day. This year’s halftime show will feature superstars Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.
Wins & Losses
Reigning Super Bowl 53 champs, the New England Patriots, have appeared in the most Super Bowls (11). The Patriots also are tied with Pittsburgh for the most wins (6) and Denver for the most losses (5) in Super Bowl history.
Commercials
The first Super Bowl was played in January of 1967. At the time, a television commercial cost advertisers $40,000. Last year, CBS broadcast Super Bowl LIII and charged advertisers a record of $5.25 million for a 30-second spot. That’s roughly $175,000 per second.
Making Money
Players that advance to a Super Bowl earn bonuses all throughout the postseason. Division winner players in the Wild Card round earn $29,000. Players on wild card teams earn $27,000 – no matter whether they win or lose!
For teams that advance to the Divisional Round, players receive $29,000, and players on teams that play for a conference championship earn an additional $54,000. Last year, players on the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots each earned an additional $118,000. The losers, the Los Angeles Rams, earned $59,000 each. The amounts earned in the postseason are all determined by the NFL and NFL Players’ Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
