Hits Happen Are you Covered?
We all know that accidents happen. Most often it is someone else’s negligence. Most, not all, people obey the mandatory insurance provisions of the state statutes. Some folks don’t purchase any insurance. More and more people get around those mandatory insurance statutes by purchasing insurance on a monthly payment plan, obtain their drivers licenses and then don’t pay for the balance of the insured term. THUS, there are many, many uninsured/underinsured drivers out there. You might say “so what” I have insurance? Do you really? Are you covered?
It is often not known that your Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage only kicks in to the extent it exceeds the coverage of the negligent party. For example, if the negligent driver purchased a $25,000 to $50,000 insurance policy and you also have a $25,000 to $50,000 policy you will collect nothing from your insurance carrier. You get nothing because your carrier receives a CREDIT for what the negligent drivers policy paid. If there is no insurance on the negligent driver, you would collect your policy limit in a serious accident case. Often that amount is insufficient to pay for medical, lost earnings, pain and suffering and permanent injury.
Have you looked at a hospital bill lately? You can spend $15,000 or more in just the ER room in a serious accident. Imagine if you are admitted to the hospital!
I am not selling insurance. I am promoting adequate coverage in the current day where medical billings have gone through the roof and more and more drivers don’t care to have insurance. Be advised accordingly… and ask yourself “am I covered?”
