SOSC to Postpone/Cancel Some Fundraising Events Due to the Coronavirus
In the interest of the health and safety of the Special Olympics Southern California community and due to the growing concern of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), we have made the following decisions effective immediately.
Postponements and Cancellations
• We are postponing the Mojave Desert Law Enforcement Torch Run that was scheduled for March 29. We are rescheduling it for the fall.
• We are cancelling the Santa Clarita Basketball Shoot-A-Thon that was scheduled for April 11.
• We are cancelling the Heart of a Champion event that was scheduled for April 18. We are working with the Heart of a Champion Committee to identify an alternative experience through which our friends can still participate in supporting our athletes. More details to come on that at a later date.
• We are postponing the SCV Charity Golf Tournament that was scheduled for April 27 at The Oaks Club. It has been rescheduled for Monday, September 14.
• We have cancelled the LASD Chili Cook-Off that was scheduled for May 2 at the Jack Bones Equestrian Center.
Updates
• The Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions Donation Campaign will still happen from April 1 through April 28. Please shop and support SOSC during April.
• For all Tip-A-Cops, we will follow the direction of the lead law enforcement agency on whether we host, modify, postpone, or cancel them. If a Tip-a-Cop is canceled, postponed, or modified, we will contact all people involved and update the online events calendar.
• We will not ask or have athletes work fundraising events or speaking engagements.
The health and safety of the Special Olympics Southern California community, including our athletes, coaches, volunteers, and employees, are our top priority. After consulting with our Official Health Partner, Kaiser Permanente; local authorities; and our partners on how to move forward, we believe these are the best actions to take.
We will continue to monitor the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) daily as this is a quickly evolving situation, and we will update you if other fundraisers or programming is modified and as new information arises.
Everyone at SOSC wishes you well and to take care. The best prevention against COVID-19 remains taking regular health precautions so we put together some tips to help you stay healthy. You can view them a thttps://wearesosc.org/2020/03/05/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-what-you-can-do-resources/.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your local field office (www.sosc.org/programs. Thank you!
