American Cancer Society Office Closes

by | May 30, 2020 | Community

The American Cancer Society is facing a threat from the Covid-19 pandemic that is unprecedented in its one-hundred-year history. The coronavirus has severely impacted the fundraising capability of ACS which is projecting a significant shortfall locally and nationally this year.
This financial hardship has resulted in cost-saving measures including reducing its budget by decreasing staff and closing some offices. This has resulted in the recent closure of the local Santa Clarita ACS office after 30 years in operation. Janine Jones, SCV Leadership Council Chair said, “I am devastated to hear the news of our ‘home’ closing, but we will still have a strong presence in the community. We have a decades-long history of successful fundraising and community outreach. Our passionate, dedicated, and selfless volunteers will continue the mission of ACS.”
Nancy Coulter, past leadership council president added, “Our mission continues to be vital.  We have helped many cancer patients over the years and have many more to help.
The Society has always been about people touching people and we will remain as such.”
The Society’s leadership council met to discuss how the SCV unit will move forward to fundraise and provide services during these challenging times. ACS is 98% volunteer run, and volunteers are already considering alternate fundraising projects and campaigns to generate resources which support its life-saving mission.
The Society’s Discovery Shop, an upscale resale shop located at 26570-B Bouquet Canyon Rd, will remain open once restrictions are lifted, and Relay For Life is currently being rescheduled. “I have so many great memories of volunteering with so many amazing volunteers that have the same mission of ending cancer. The office closure has made our mission of attacking cancer even more of a priority. Cancer patients still need us now more than ever! To join the fight please visit Scvrelay.org and register today!” commented Cass Stauffer, long time supporter and volunteer.
The American Cancer Society continues to remain available to provide information, support and guidance to patients and families 24 hours a day, seven days a week via the free helpline, 1-800-227-2345, and website, cancer.org
“The American Cancer Society in Santa Clarita is a volunteer organization that is greater than any physical building,” continued Coulter. “The heart of the organization is the volunteers whose steadfast commitment to the mission has not changed. They remain energized and dedicated to serving the needs of cancer patients. They continue to raise funds for research, education and services that support, empower and encourage families facing cancer.”
