Become a Road To Recovery Volunteer

by | Jun 24, 2020 | Community

One of the unexpected challenges for someone receiving a cancer diagnosis can be finding transportation to medical appointments and treatments. The American Cancer Society (ACS) has established the Road To Recovery program to help ensure cancer patients receive the critical care they need by providing free transportation to and from appointments for those who may otherwise have no way to get there. To protect patient and volunteer safety during the pandemic, the program had to be temporarily suspended. However, as restrictions are lifted, this vital service will resume. Many individuals who had to postpone treatments during this time will need transportation for rescheduled appointments, and ACS expects an overwhelming number of requests for rides once the program safely resumes.
Volunteers are crucial in providing this vital service. They donate their time and the use of their vehicle, but they also provide support and encouragement to those going through treatment. Volunteer Sherry Grossman says, “I am grateful to friends who drove my husband to radiation treatments, and I want to pay it forward by driving others who might not be able to get to their appointments otherwise.”
The requirements for becoming a volunteer are simple:
-Valid driver’s license
-Good driving record
-Reliable vehicle
-Proof of auto insurance
-Dependable computer access
-At least 18 years old
The American Cancer Society also conducts a background check and provides a self-paced, 90-minute online orientation which includes software training so the driver can connect to the ride request. Volunteers select the rides that fit their availability. Ana Boote, ACS program manager, says, “We want volunteers who will complete their training now so that we’ll be fully staffed when the program is allowed to resume.”
Transportation is key to cancer care. Even the best treatment can’t work if a patient doesn’t have access to it. For anyone looking for a way to give back to the community, this is a perfect opportunity. Cancer patients need us.
