Zonta Club Awards, Scholarships & Grants
The Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley awarded scholarships to outstanding applicants. These awards are usually presented at the annual Awards Night program. Due to COVID-19 restrictions this year, processing and award presentation were all completed virtually – via e-mail and Zoom. This is the first public announcement.
Three young women share the Club’s Young Women in Public Affairs Award (YWPA). The prize money is distributed to first, second and third place winners, who attend local high schools or college, and are 16-19 years of age. The competition also provides a potential award amount of up to an additional $5,500. The award is designed to encourage young women to take an interest in public affairs and perhaps pursue a career in a related field. This year’s recipients are: Joelle Min, a student from Academy of the Canyons, who has future goals to become a lawyer and leader in human rights law, and to become a US diplomat to advocate for improvement in the status of women; Brooke Friedman, a Valencia High student, whose goal is to become an orthodontist and continue to volunteer for her church, Girl Scouts, and the Red Cross; and Crystal Salinas from Hart High School whose goal is to become a Global Health Physician to improve health worldwide.
Four women are sharing the Virginia Wrage Memorial Scholarships given to mature women over 40 years of age who have faced a life-changing situation and need help to become self-sufficient again. The award is named for a Zonta member who recreated her life as a flight attendant in her 50s and followed her dream for several years before succumbing to cancer. This year’s recipients are Jessenia, Tamara, Ann, and Cynthia; they all want to improve their lives by continuing their education and work toward success in life.
The Zonta Club of SCV is proud to present these awards and scholarships so that more women of all ages are empowered in society. The winners will be formally awarded in September 2020.
The Zonta Club of SCV also awards Community Grants to non-profit organizations who support programs that empower women. The deadline for grant applications has been extended to August 30, 2020. The Community Grant winners will be awarded in October 2020.
