Cancer Does Not Pause – American Cancer Society
For the last 6 months, our lives have been overwhelmed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Financially, socially, physically, and mentally, we have been consumed with challenging decisions that affect the lives of our families. The global pandemic has also had serious impacts on people’s ability to receive medical care.
Although COVID-19 continues to be the worldwide focus of healthcare officials, researchers, and government leaders, lurking behind this crisis is another potential health crisis. Dr. Norman E. Sharpless, the director of the National Cancer Institute, believes the COVID-19 pandemic is posing a danger to cancer patients. He says, “Ignoring life-threatening non-COVID-19 conditions such as cancer for too long may turn one public health crisis into many others.” Fewer cancers are being diagnosed, and treatment regimens are being stretched out into less frequent sessions. Dr. Sharpless continues, “Months of deferred screenings or delayed treatments could reverse the U.S. trend in improved cancer mortality that has lasted more than 25 years. Cancer does not pause for the pandemic.”
Decisions about resuming screenings or treatment depend on many factors, and all cancer patients and survivors should talk with a doctor who understands their situation and medical history. What’s important is being proactive and not ignoring health concerns.
To meet the needs of patients and caregivers, cancer resources are currently available despite the pandemic. Locally, the SCV Cancer Consortium—a partnership between the American Cancer Society, City of Hope, Providence Holy Cross, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Sheila R. Veloz Breast Center, Circle of Hope, and the Michael Hoefflin Foundation—provides free resources that support our community. Circle of Hope offers financial, educational, and emotional assistance including classes and programs. The Michael Hoefflin Foundation provides financial, social, and emotional support to those families dealing with pediatric cancer. The American Cancer Society provides free rides to treatment, free places to stay near hospitals during treatment, and free resources.
The Consortium encourages everyone to monitor their health, including non-COVID-19 health issues, and utilize the support services that its organizations provide. Information for each organization can be located online. For live 24/7 support, contact ACS toll-free at 1-800-227-2345 or chat with us at www.cancer.org.
