A Community Comes Together To Fight Suicide
Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide is preventable. The Santa Clarita Out of the Darkness Campus Walk, Day of Action will bring together hundreds of participants throughout the city and beyond to raise funds and spread a message of hope and light for those that struggle and to honor the lives lost to suicide. Hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Greater Los Angeles Chapter, the Day Of Action will take place on Saturday May 1 with the virtual opening ceremony beginning at 9am.
Dawnel DeRubeis (Walk-Chair) started this event 3 years ago with the intention of turning hope into action. Dawnel says that although the walk has made a pivot this year to the virtual space in order to keep everyone safe, the power behind the event is not lost. Each participant has the opportunity to select from three different activities as their way of participating. An active activity, a self-care activity, or gaming. The time that each participant spends doing one of these activities can be done prior to the main event on May 1, or on that day. The main event on May 1 will include the opening ceremony which is full of entertainment, courageous speakers, a virtual resource fair, and much much more!
Dawnel encourages everyone to participate and to invite family and friends and notes that all ages are welcome. “The beauty of a virtual event is that people from near or far can join us. We already have registered participants from Illinois, Maryland and as far as Romania. Your participation matters and will help us shatter the stigma and save lives!”
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leading non-profit dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health through education, research and advocacy.
