Blue Star Ranch Serving our veterans and their families
Blue Star Ranch is a non-profit horse ranch located in the Santa Clarita Valley on Sierra Highway and Placerita Canyon Road. The Ranch offers veterans and their families, at no cost to the veteran, Equine Therapy for treatment of PTSD. A one-hour session consists of the veteran working through a series of exercises to improve communication and collaboration with the support of a counselor, Equine Therapist and a horse. No horseback riding is involved. Horses sense emotions in humans and react accordingly. If humans are behaving aggressively, horses will walk away. If humans are acting in a relaxed manner, horses will relax and happily interact together. This is the atmosphere needed to bring emotional problems to the surface for examination.
Mike Salinas, U.S. Army Veteran and Blue Star Graduate:
My experience with therapy offered through the VA felt very impersonal. I never felt that caring or compassionate connection with the therapist. Sessions tended to feel very textbook, more like attending a lecture, rather than interacting. Meetings are held in an office and tended to be very boring and extremely quiet. Psych medications were always a recommendation. Scheduling appointments and traveling to the location were difficult, especially on a weekly basis.
When I found Blue Star Ranch, all sessions are outside. You are interacting with the horse and therapist. The interaction with the horses and props brings up all sorts of different emotions that you did not even recognize you had bottled up inside. The methods of talking, grooming the horses, grounding techniques and troubleshooting problems are very relaxed and easygoing. I often left with a smile on my face and feeling like a tremendous burden had been lifted. The therapy feels whole and complete.
If you or someone you know is suffering with PTSD, contact us and set up an appointment. We have spots available immediately for two families. Call us at 661-312-6184 or email us at nancy@bluestarranch.org. We look forward to serving our veterans and their families. This is where the healing begins.
