Operation School Bell®

by | Nov 3, 2021 | Community

Assistance League Santa Clarita’s signature philanthropic program is Operation School Bell®. In this program, through which disadvantaged students from transitional kindergarten through twelfth grade are able to select new clothing. This allows them to arrive in the classroom feeling confident and better prepared to learn. Students are referred to us by their guidance counselors from the 55 public schools in the Santa Clarita Valley. For the past few years, we have held our shopping events at the Old Navy store in Stevenson Ranch. Our volunteers help excited students find their sizes as they choose outfits in their favorite styles and colors. All of them walk out with a great big smile on their face! This year, our member volunteer in charge of running the program is Melanie Cotterell, who has worked very hard with her committee to make sure everything runs smoothly.
“My mom really struggled to take care of our family, and I wore the same clothes to school all week. I remember getting to go shopping and how proud I was to have new clothes given to me. —Operation School Bell recipient, now an adult
“A few years ago, during some hard times, my son got a $75 gift card for school clothes. We were very thankful. Now that we are doing better, I try to shop here (Assistance League Resale Store) often so that you are able to provide other kids with gift cards to help them out.” —Mom of Operation School Bell recipient
Since 1991, over 35,000 students have benefitted from this program for a cumulative value of over $3,200,000.
Money raised from donations, special events and proceeds from our resale store fund this and our other philanthropic programs that help the Santa Clarita Valley community.
