Fun(d)raising All Summer
Santa Clarita Valley’s Relay For Life, held on May 14, was a successful fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This was the first in-person Relay at Central Park since the pandemic foreclosed events in 2019. The event raised over $168,000 to fund life-saving research and free programs and services that cancer patients depend on such as rides to treatment, lodging during treatment and a 24/7 cancer helpline.
Over 650 participants and 53 teams took part in the themed event “Hope Around the World” which celebrated cancer survivors and memorialized lost loved ones. Despite the 95 degree temperatures, participants’ commitment and determination to find a cure for cancer motivated them to brave the sweltering heat. Guests donned hats, carried umbrellas and wore sunscreen as they walked the track throughout the day.
Although the event is over, Relay season continues until the end of August, so there is still time to donate, fundraise and work together to reach SCV Relay’s goal of raising $225,000. As regional staffer Abby Smith says, “Cancer doesn’t stop and neither do we. We will continue our fundraising and education outreach to the community.”
Our community can come together all summer to fundraise, educate the community and have fun in the sun! It’s a great opportunity to share important sun safety tips about wearing UV protective apparel and hats, putting on sunglasses, and using sunscreen. Perhaps a Sun Safety Fundraiser!
SCV Relay For Life would like to thank its generous sponsors, UCLA Health and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, as well as other community sponsors that provided resources to ensure the day’s success. Community supporters and selfless volunteers worked tirelessly to create a fun, meaningful and financially successful event. This year’s Relay organizers are grateful to community members for supporting this event and they encourage our continued participation: “We look forward to seeing you at Relay next year!”
