Assistance League of Santa Clarita’s Assisteens®
Assisteens® is the youth auxiliary of Assistance League of Santa Clarita. “The goals for those who participate are to promote leadership, development a sense of community responsibility, cultivate self-reliance and improve public speaking.” Assisteens is composed of students in grades 7 – 12 who meet to plan activities and work together on philanthropic programs throughout the year within the Santa Clarita Valley. The members support chapter programs while maintaining their own philanthropic programs.
Assisteens met in September to plan their fall philanthropic events: the Canned Food Drive project and Foster Backpacks program. The first Canned Food Drive took place on October 16. Member volunteers and community members dropped off food donations at the Valencia Hills Clubhouse or Bridgeport Elementary School parking lots. Assisteens managed and coordinated the collection of these much-needed food items. These items support the Inspire Scholars program at College of the Canyons and help stretch their limited resources. A second Canned Food Drive supporting the Inspire Scholars program at College of the Canyons will take place February of 2024.
The Foster Backpack program provides essential items to foster youth and children under the care of the Department of Child and Family Services. The purchasing of the supplies and assembling of the backpacks will take place later this month. These items are then distributed to the social workers for the foster youth and children entering foster care.
These two programs are just a few of the many philanthropic programs Assisteens of Santa Clarita contribute to our Santa Clarita community. There are 40 Assisteens under the mentorship of Assisteens Coordinator Lori Wilson and mentors Carla Combs, Francine Metcalf, Jan Ladd, Jennifer Lopez and Judy Plouff.
