Child & Family Center Receives Federal Funding
Congressman Mike Garcia, California’s 27th Congressional District, presented a check in the amount of $2,259,761 to Child & Family Center on Friday, August 9, 2024. The federal funding is through the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for their Economic Development Initiative (EDI) – Community Project Funding (CPF) grant. This grant funds projects such as housing, homelessness prevention, public facilities, and critical infrastructure amongst other things.
The grant will be used to replace the existing roof on the Center’s main building and standalone education building with GTA CoolStar energy-reflecting roof surface; replace 26 HVAC units with high-efficiency energy units; and installing a solar energy system sufficient to provide more than 90% of electricity usage. The Center’s main facility was completed in 2001, and the separate Education Building in 2008. These qualify as critical infrastructure needs and both structures are in dire need of upgrades. Child & Family Center will utilize local and reputable contractors for the work, thereby contributing to supporting our local economy, skilled laborers, and businesses.
Local civic leaders, board members and community members attended the presentation. “This funding will ensure that the clients and staff have a comfortable place to be while receiving services,” said Bill Cooper, Board Chair. “As a nonprofit, the time, energy and resources the Center has goes directly to the clients and community we serve. Funding opportunities like this don’t come around very often and we are grateful to the Congressman and our supporters who helped make this happen.”
“It’s an exciting day for the Center,” said Nikki Buckstead, CEO. “We have long needed these critical upgrades for our buildings. We look forward to no more leaky roofs and having HVAC units that work, and we are very excited for the opportunity to get solar for our buildings as well. Combined, our main campus and Education Building are over 32,650 square feet. The savings in energy costs will allow us to provide more services for our clients.”
Child & Family Center is an essential resource for low-income / economically disadvantaged families throughout California’s 27th Congressional District, providing critical social services to infants, children, youth and adults in the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys.
