We, in the spa industry, understand that there is a certain amount of nervousness that comes along with going to a spa, especially for men or for those who’ve never been to one.  When you take into account the fact that a lot of the spa services require taking most of your clothes off and a “stranger” touching parts of your body, the uneasiness level will undoubtedly escalate.  These are obviously hurdles you will have to overcome.  Once these obstacles have been defeated, the benefits are virtually immeasurable.

Everyone has heard the old adage about the “common cold”, but within Eastern herbal medicine, not all colds are equally “common.”  The common cold is a disorder with symptoms such as nasal obstruction and discharge, sneezing, headache, cough, fever, chilliness and malaise as its physical manifestations.  These symptoms are often accompanied by fatigue, loss of appetite and fitful sleep.  This illness is mainly due to climactic changes in the weather.  Dressing inappropriately, being drenched by rainstorms, excessive fatigue and other life factors, such as stress and anxiety, all may predispose one to catch a cold, as well as decreasing one’s ability to resist the cold itself.

Taking time to celebrate who you are and all your great qualities is not as easy as one would think.  So often we wish we would change this or that about ourselves.  Imagine if you will, if we could stand still for a moment and celebrate all that we are in that moment.  Not wanting to change a thing.  Cherishing who we are and loving all our qualities.  Yes, that means even loving our short-comings — whether we would love to lose ten pounds or erase the passage of time on our face — what if we just loved ourselves right here, right now in spite of those things?  It seems as though we never appreciate those little quirks or imperfections that make us who we are.  I know the things I am attracted to in other people are things like that crooked tooth or the scar that tells a story about their life.  I wish for each and every one of us is the ability to celebrate our differences and bask in the true beauty of ourselves.

Back to the Past with Perms

Remember in the ‘80s the popular trend of getting a spiral perm?  It seemed like everyone was getting a perm in those days.  Where did the perm or permanent waving get its start?  In 1905 Charles Nessler invented a wired machine to curl hair permanently.  The way his invention worked was after the hair was wound onto the rods that were wired to an electric current.  The heat generated from the electric current helped in forming a permanent curl.  There were other variations of this idea throughout the years.  In 1941 the modern-day perm was created.  It was called the cold wave.  Instead of heat to set the hair chemicals were used.
