Measure E
Voters in the Newhall School District will be asked in November to approve a $60 million bond to upgrade school facilities. The bond, Measure E, is technically an extension of an earlier bond approved by voters in 1999. Property tax assessments for homeowners would remain at current levels if the new measure passes.
Board members Christy Smith and Mike Shapiro are co-chairing the bond campaign. All 10 schools in the district, which serve Newhall, most of Valencia, Stevenson Ranch and Westridge will benefit from the bond funds, Smith said.

All the excitement of a royal fashion show arrives close to home for Santa Clarita Valley residents on Sunday, October 23, as the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Guild presents its 27th Annual Fashion Show at the Sheraton Universal Hotel with featured designer Lourdes Chavez, famed for her elegant and sophisticated creations often worn by Hollywood’s most famous stars.
Inspired by the royal wedding of Prince William and Princess Kate, a “Royal Fashion Show,” will be produced by Carin Holmenas, complete with professional models and a full-size runway.
Committee on Aging Selects Local Businesswoman for Senior Center Executive Director Slot
The Board of Directors of the Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging (COA) has announced the selection of Rachelle Dardeau, M.S., M.S.W., as executive director, effective September 6, 2011. Ms. Dardeau is a 15-year resident of the Santa Clarita Valley who has over 25 years’ experience developing and administering programs that benefit seniors. The non-profit COA operates the Senior Center and provides a broad range of services valley wide.
Hart @ Home Orientation Kicks-Off First Year Program
The newly created home school program, Hart @ Home, offered by the Hart School District is off to a great start with 30 local students enrolled in the program. An orientation was held on August 18, for the students and their parents to pick up their books, meet the principal and teachers and get a computer lesson on accessing online coursework. The students also enjoyed meeting other students in the program.

2. Know they have access to the real facts about our City government and the programs the City offers.

Here is a quick rundown of a few of the issues we are working on at City Hall right now:
Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley Improving the Lives of Women through Service, Advocacy and Awareness.
Zonta Club provides grants to mature women who are at a crossroad and need assistance to make a new life. The Virginia Wrage Memorial Fund was established to help these women achieve social and economic independence following a life-altering event. This year, a total of $7,000 in grants are available for women who need assistance to enter a new phase in life.
What Does Community Education Do at COC?
Everyone in Santa Clarita has heard of College of the Canyons. The college is one of the best two-year full-service community colleges in the State, offering several transfer programs as well as certificate and degree career training programs. Through its Economic Development Division, COC also offers hands-on training programs to local businesses and industries, a business incubator, and FastTrack training opportunities.
Art Classic Gala Fundraiser
The Santa Clarita Artists’ Association (SCAA) will host the 22nd annual Art Classic on Saturday, October 15, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Hart Hall at Hart Park in Newhall. A free public viewing will be on Sunday, Oct 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“The annual Art Classic Gala is the Club’s biggest fundraiser,” said SCAA president, Zony Gordon. “Local artists get to show their outstanding art, it supports our scholarship program and enables us to provide demo artists at our monthly membership meetings as part of ongoing art education for the community. The Gala is a great spectacle for all of Santa Clarita. Origami lessons and face painting will be available to kids at the free public viewing on Sunday.”
11th Annual Make a Difference Day Set for October 22 Activity will benefit local schools and charitable organizations
Make a Difference Day, America’s “National Day of Doing Good,” is set for Saturday, October 22. Part of the country’s largest volunteer service effort, Make a Difference Day is hosted locally by HandsOn Santa Clarita, in partnership with the City of Santa Clarita.
Projects are “hands-on”―painting, landscaping, weed abatement, clean-up and construction activities to food and book drives― all designed to produce visible, positive results in one day.
Hart School District Holds Successful Fair
More than 4,000 parents and students attended the Hart School District College & Career Fair Wednesday evening, September 7 at West Ranch High School. The fair was established to assist students with the very important step of drafting a career plan to be followed while making post-secondary education decisions.
Admissions representatives from close to 100 two and four-year California colleges and universities, Career Colleges such as ITT Tech and many out-of-state schools were in attendance distributing literature, providing information and answering questions of college and career-bound students. Career preparation, apprenticeship program, law enforcement and military representatives were also on hand to answer questions about their educational opportunities.
11th Annual Bow-Wows & Meows Pet Fair Offering Free Family Entertainment and Low Cost Pet Adoptions
Are you seeking free family fun or looking for that perfect pet? The 11th Annual Bow-Wows & Meows Pet Fair will feature an exciting lineup of entertainment, pet-related vendors and adoptable dogs and cats from Los Angeles County shelters at Newhall’s William S. Hart Park on Sunday, October 9.
The festivities kick off at 11 a.m. with a delicious array of food, including vegetarian options, demonstrations from Ventura County Sheriff K-9 Search & Rescue and an educational seminar on “The Truth About Pit Bulls.” The popular Famous Fun Dog Show, with categories ranging from best vocalist to mystery mutt to pet-owner look alike, will be making a return appearance, as well.

Brandon Bedient, an 11 year old goalie for the Valencia Express Hockey Club, wanted to motivate his PW A team and in order to do so, he decided to give something away that was very important to him. After growing his long blonde locks for six long years, Brandon made the commitment to cut his hair off if they won their Labor Day Tournament at the Ice Station Valencia.
Dracula Arrives in Santa Clarita And He’s Hungry!
The Canyon Theatre Guild is proud to present a new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. This script, by Steven Dietz, restores the suspense and seduction of the classic novel to the stage just in time for a frightening Halloween thrill. Under the direction of TimBen Boydston, this Dracula is filled with chills and some unexpected surprises.

Bake Sale to Benefit TrinityKids Care
MOMS Club of Canyon Country – South is pleased to announce a bake sale to benefit TrinityKids Care, a program of Providence TrinityCare Hospice. TrinityKids Care is the only pediatric hospice service in Los Angeles and Orange County for infants, children and adolescents with life-limiting illnesses. They also provide in-home care and support for young patients and their families.
Santa Clarita Fights Diabetes on October 15
The American Diabetes Association’s Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes annual Santa Clarita Valley Walk will take place on Saturday, October 15, beginning and ending at beautiful Bridgeport Park located on Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia.
The morning will begin with participants, families, co-workers and supporters arriving at 8 a.m. in preparation for the 9 a.m. Walk. Onsite, not only will participants enjoy the fun and camaraderie of the Walk itself, but also have the opportunity to partake in wonderful food and beverages to keep their energy levels high for the stride.

Every year, communities across the United States and Canada come together to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at its annual Light the Night Walk. It is an evening of fun and food, music and mission, camaraderie and community, with an inspirational display of hope as participants carry illuminated tinted balloons representing survivors (white), supporters (red) and those who’ve lost a loved one to blood cancer (gold).
Be sure to save the date of Saturday, October 29 for this year’s SCV Light The Night Walk at Bridgeport Park in Valencia. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with live music by Blue Sky, followed by a remembrance ceremony honoring lost loved ones at 6 p.m., and the Walk beginning at twilight (approximately 7 p.m.).
