An Eagle Above Eagles

An Eagle Above Eagles

For most Scouts, their ultimate goal is to finally reach the rank of Eagle.  But then what?  Is there more to being an Eagle Scout?  Troop 499, also known as Old Glory of Stevenson Ranch, has one Eagle Scout that exemplifies what it is to go above and beyond the rank of Eagle.  Zack Kazuo Smith earned his rank of Eagle Scout in December of 2008.  For his Eagle project, he led a group of scouts and adults planting trees, creating a brick pathway at the end of the bridge and repairing a dirt pathway in Hart Park.

Shopping Reason Number Seven “Christmas in July”

Shopping Reason Number Seven “Christmas in July”

It all happened because we ran out of storage space at Assistance League’s Resale Shop.  We had boxes of Christmas items stacked in every nook and cranny of the store and it was only June!  One of our volunteers suggested that we sell some of our Christmas merchandise in July.  We did not think our customers would be interested in Christmas décor when it was 95 degrees outside and 170 plus shopping days before December 25, however, we decided to try it.

Hello!
Here in Santa Clarita we have a lot of choices for outdoor recreation including 60 miles of off-street trails and paseos, 20 well-appointed city parks, our Sports Complex with its three swimming pools, skatepark, gymnasium, activities center and sand volleyball court and walking trails.  Here’s a quick snapshot of some happenings around the community:
In Old Town Newhall, we’re currently under construction for a new and expanded library to replace the old library in Newhall.  Located at the corner of Main Street and Lyons Avenue, the new 30,000 square-foot library will serve as a community gathering place for decades to come.

Following the Path of Charity

It was last April of 2010 that I first me the Ciccone family.  It was time for big sister Marina Ciccone’s first haircut.  It was after watching a program with her family about cancer that Marina, five years old, saw children who lost their hair because of the disease.  She decided she wanted to do something about it and learned more about an organization called Locks of Love.

COC’s Honored for Commitment to Community Service

For the fifth time in as many years, College of the Canyons has been honored for its dedication to providing access to service-learning educational opportunities with inclusion on the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. Administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, inclusion on the annual Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement. College of the Canyons is one of only 15 higher education institutions in the state — and the only California community college — to earn ‘distinction’ honors.  The college has been included on the Honor Roll every year since its inception in 2006 — having previously earned ‘distinction’ honors in 2007 and 2009.
