Zonta and Soroptimist Clubs Join Together at Meeting
It was a great Zonta and Soroptimist meeting, as the local members of the two organizations joined together for their yearly joint meeting. Hosted by Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley, the highlighted speaker for the evening was Superior Court Judge Grace Freixes. Judge Freixes is very active in the Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) and assists the SCV Bar Association by presiding over a mock trial she developed involving 40 high school students; she participates in the three annual “Every 15 Minutes” program, a teen driving program attended by all high school students in their junior or senior year.
Assistance League Footsteps 5K Run/Walk to Benefit Operation School Bell®
Imagine a child who has to attend school with no underwear or socks. A child who owns only one set of clothes, who goes to school without a jacket and wears sandals in the middle of winter. Fact or fiction? This scenario is an unfortunate daily reality for thousands of schoolchildren across the nation. Operation School Bell is meeting the need in the Santa Clarita Valley. Volunteer members of Assistance League are stepping up to turn “caring and commitment into action,” with their national philanthropic program Operation School Bell.

Reading and Fun
On March 2, the National Education Association (NEA) calls for every child to read in the company of a caring adult. This is in conjunction with NEA’s Read Across America Day, an annual reading program that calls for every child to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of author Dr. Seuss. But it doesn’t stop there. Read Across America has a year-round program to motivate children to read.
Moms Take Over the SCV
Ask any mom who’s moved to Santa Clarita over the past decade, “Why the SCV?” and you’ll probably hear words like “safe,” “good schools” and “community.” But ask a few more questions and you might also hear words like “difficult,” “lonely” and “isolating.” While our population has grown by the tens of thousands over the past 10 years, it’s also gotten increasingly difficult to discover events, get local information and find other parents with similar values and interests.
News from SCV-Newhall Optimist Club – March 2010
Well here we are, marching into March, and to all of our Irish friends, a “Happy St. Patrick’s Day.”
When it comes to the “Green,” all three of the local Optimist Clubs, SCV-Newhall Optimist Club, Greater SCV Optimist Club and the new Canyon Country Optimist Club, were doing that thanks to our recent “Casino Night” that was held at the end of January at the American Legion Hall in Newhall. All three clubs participated in putting on this event and plan on making it an annual one. Thanks to all the people attending and for supporting our efforts to making this fundraiser a huge success.

This Warrior-Princess Court spans three generations - from a 40-something to a 70-years-young. These women will be at the Walk for Hope, April 17 at Castaic Lake.
Linda Ludwig – My journey with breast cancer began on a cold day in December 1996. I know God’s grace is sufficient, but this battle is expensive. I’m grateful to Circle of Hope as they cover what the insurance won’t.
