The much-anticipated Dancing With Our Stars is back by popular demand. On Saturday, April 24, dancers will pair up with the pros, each representing a non-profit organization, and raising money for a good cause.
“Pawsitively Pink” The 6th Annual Walk for Hope 5K on April 17
Join in the fun with family members, teams and even dog owners, and vote for their favorite vehicle at the People’s Choice Car Show along the route at the 6th Annual Walk for Hope 5K on April 17. Participating walkers will choose five winners at the car show (trucks and motorcycles included), and the top three walking teams with the highest total of pledges will be honored. Plus, our Princess Court will reward all completing walkers with a memento at the finish line for all your support.
Helping Haiti California Task Force 2 Mobilizes to Aid Victims
It’s all over the news. Government officials fear more than 100,000 people were killed in the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday, January 12. The Red Cross has even stated that up to three million people were affected by this catastrophe. And according to news reports, the scene at the capital was unimaginable. Rescue workers continue to struggle to clear the rubble.
Workshops to Help Women Strengthen Relationships through Communication
Zonta Club of SCV will host two of its ongoing LifeForward workshops in February, helping women to strengthen relationships through communications and looking at all aspects of home ownership. The free Saturday morning workshops are geared toward helping women believe in themselves and build the skills necessary to succeed.
The first workshop will be on the home ownership aspects and is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, February 13, in the community room at the Valencia Library. The presenter will be Leslye Mack, president and director of Empowerment Training for GBD Enterprises in the Antelope Valley.
The Kids Are in the Kitchen!
On Friday, February 19, The Santa Clarita Valley School Food Services Agency will kick off their 15th Annual Kids’ Cooking Campaign! The Kids’ Cooking Campaign is an annual event teaching children basic cooking skills. Beginning in February until the end of March, one school from each of the five school districts who are part of the SCV Food Services Agency will have one class planning and preparing a meal for their invited guests.
AAUW Sponsors 11th Annual Math/Science Conference
On Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Golden Valley High School, the SCV branch of American Association of University Women will host their 11th annual Math/Science Conference for 7th and 8th grade girls.
Non-profits Invited to Nominate Outstanding Local Volunteers
Deadline is early February for local non-profits and service organizations to nominate their outstanding volunteers to be honored at the 2010 Women in Service Celebration sponsored by Zonta Club of SCV. This year’s brunch will be held Saturday, March 20, at Robinson Ranch clubhouse.
All nominees will be guests of Zonta at the brunch and will receive an award on behalf of their sponsoring organization. One outstanding volunteer will be selected to receive the Carmen Sarro Award for Community Service.
Transit Access Pass Cards Now Available at Sports Complex Aquatic Center
Due to popular demand, Transit Access Pass (TAP) cards are now available at the City’s Sports Complex Aquatic Center Registration Office, located at 20850 Centre Parkway. City of Santa Clarita Transit riders can now purchase and reload TAP cards at four convenient locations across the City.
The City added the Sports Complex Aquatic Center to the list of local retailers offering TAP cards to offer more flexible days and hours for local transit riders to purchase passes.
City Accepting Names For Santa Clarita Youth Grove
The City of Santa Clarita’s Blue Ribbon Task Force is currently accepting names to be placed in the City’s Youth Grove located in Central Park. The deadline for submission is Monday, February 15, 2010.
The City’s Youth Grove is dedicated to Santa Clarita youth, 24 years and younger, who lost their lives in traffic-related incidents.

I wanted to provide you with a quick snapshot of some of the high profile programs and projects your City will be working on during 2010.
The Santa Clarita City Council, in conjunction with our community, will continue working with Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon to pass federal legislation that will prevent mega-mining in Soledad Canyon. After a decade of hard work, there is no mega mining project in Soledad Canyon. New legislation recently introduced by Congressman McKeon will hopefully seal the deal and forever protect our community from the effects of a large scale mining project.

The Repertory East Playhouse opened its 2010 Season with Lost In Yonkers, by Neil Simon and sponsored by Mission View Public Schools. “This is a classic piece of American literature by one of the finest American playwrights in history. Li’l Abner is Coming to The Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center!
ESCAPE Theatre is proud to present 220 talented youth and teens in this fun, foot-stompin’ musical, Li’l Abner. Performances will be held at College of the Canyons PAC, Friday, February 19 at 7 p.m., Saturday, February 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, February 21 at 2 p.m. All families are sure to enjoy this high energy musical accompanied by a full orchestra, colorful costumes, and amazing singing and dancing from the talented kids!
