Extra! Extra! Call for More than an Apple-a-Day

Do you know a teacher who deserves a kind pat-on-the-back for going above-and-beyond the call of duty?  Has your child or teen been the recipient of the passionate nature of a teacher who goes the extra mile and recognizes the importance of a strong education?
You are being called to nominate the March “Teacher of the Month” for The Magazine of Santa Clarita.

Valentines Day is the second largest greeting card giving day-of-the-year and probably number one if we accounted for all of the boxed valentines that children give to one another.  Many people buy candy and flowers for the one they love on February 14 as a tradition honoring this day. Yet, the day is named after St. Valentine, a Catholic Priest from the third Century in Rome who was secretly marrying men to the women they loved despite it being outlawed by Emperor Cladius II.

How to Choose Age Appropriate Movies for Your Children

How to Choose Age Appropriate Movies for Your Children

I am an absolute movie buff and truly enjoy the experience of going to the movies.  From comedies to drama, romance to horror, I enjoy them all.  Many times over the years I have walked into the theater and thought to myself, am I in the right theater?  I ask myself this question because I notice more and more children watching graphic, R-rated films.  As an adult I think, my gosh, what is that child doing watching this movie?  Now I am not a parent, so I have always eased my mind with the fact that the child’s parents must think it is okay.

Will Local Boy Win National Game Show?

Will Local Boy Win National Game Show?

A Canyon Country 11-year-old will appear this month on a Friday special episode of the popular NBC game show, 1 vs. 100 .  The game pits one person against 100 others for a chance to win a cash prize of up to one million dollars. Bailey Lalley, a student at Mountain View Elementary School, Saugus, was thrilled to meet the host of the show comedian Bob Saget (“America’s Funniest Home Videos,” “Full House”) recently at Culver Studios, where the show is taped.

Success Comes with a Well-Prepared Study Space

Success Comes with a Well-Prepared Study Space

Study skills and time management lay the foundation for success in all of the academic areas and even affect success in the future workplace.  Because official grades are not given for study skills or time management, many parents and students tend to overlook their development.  Students suffering from poor grades across several subjects often struggle more from a lack of study skills than from anything else.

Whisper Sweet Nothings

Whisper Sweet Nothings

“Whisper Sweet Nothings” or “Whisper” for short, a black quarterhorse mare, was badly abused before being rescued and brought to The Gentle Barn.  She came full of fear and anger and she felt like she had to fight to protect herself.  You could see it in her sad yet beautiful big brown eyes, not to mention the big cigar burn on her but.  She bit, kicked, reared and bucked without notice.  The job was to let her get her anger out, while at the same time showing her that she was safe and that the abuse was over.

Local American History Contest Winners Announced

Local American History Contest Winners Announced

If it takes a lot of creativity and research to convey the history of the world, then nine Santa Clarita area students got it right when they entered and won top honors in the American History Contest sponsored by the Alliklik Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
When asked to submit essays and posters about the founding of Jamestown and the hardships suffered by the early settlers, the elementary and high school students listed below did a remarkable job and we congratulate them on a job well-done.

Resolve To Regain Control

Resolve To Regain Control

Is “getting organized” a perpetual New Year’s resolution?  Are you running faster each day and getting farther behind?  Have you started a multitude of projects and failed to complete any of them to your satisfaction?  Do you often feel overwhelmed?
Maybe you are suffering from culturally induced Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), says a former Harvard Medical School instructor and ADD expert.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Camp Program

The Importance of Choosing the Right Camp Program

It is only February, but summer and the time to sign your child up for camp are right around the corner.  Now is the time to research the right program for your child and your family’s needs.  During the process of searching for a camp, it is important to understand that there are no government oversight regulations for camps.  The only nationally recognized form of oversight is the American Camp Association which oversees the accreditation process of over 300 national standards for health and safety as well as camp operations and program design.

Cooking with Young Children

Cooking with Young Children

Teaching your child to cook is not hard; the hard part could be getting them out of the kitchen.  When you are teaching them, remember to stress safety and cleanliness, after all, these are skills they will need for many years to come. Start by finding simple no-cook recipes.  A salad or other no-cook cookie recipe is an ideal way to start.  Show your child how to hold and cut with knives.  Make sure they know to wash everything in hot soapy water as they use it, so that it becomes a habit that is part of the process and not an extra chore to do after they have finished.

Kids Birthday fun

Kids Birthday fun

Planning a birthday party for your child?  What can you do for three or four hours that will not only keep a group happy, but will allow you to manage easily, without losing your sanity in the process?  Lots of things!  First, get some help.  If another parent offers to lend his or her time, accept!  Alternatively, offer a teenager a few dollars for their time.  It will be well worth it and you’ll be happy to have help with watching your kids. Better safe than sorry.

Ten Free Kids Activities

Ten Free Kids Activities

When you think of doing things with the kids, you may think of spending huge amounts of money on junk that you don’t need or want.  Kids’ attractions are usually money traps because smart business people know that parents will spend the money on their kids if the kids are persistent enough.  Just try to get out of an amusement park with any money left in your wallet and forget about a carnival or the circus.  We once paid five dollars for a cup of lemonade!

Boys Slumber Party Ideas

Boys Slumber Party Ideas

Here’s a great idea for a boys’ slumber party.  This plan works best for eight to twelve year olds.  Younger children don’t do as well in large groups, and older children probably just won’t be interested. First, plan a menu that allows for the boys to help you in the food preparation process.  English muffin pizzas work well for this.
