SCV’s First Baby of 2008

On Tuesday, January 1st, at 6:55 a.m., Lily Rosenblatt was born—thus making her Santa Clarita Valley’s first baby of 2008.  Proud parents Nicole and Richard Rosenblatt of Green Valley celebrated their new bundle of joy at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.  Lily weighed in at 5 pounds, two ounces.

The Sticking Point

The Sticking Point

The dreaded “plateau” where weight loss seems to come to a halt is leaving us stranded with nowhere to go but up.  Surveys show that 95 percent of dieters hit this spot at some point, never to get completely back on track again.  What causes this sticking point and are there ways it can be overcome or perhaps even avoided all together?

Track Shoes Versus Running Shoes

Track Shoes Versus Running Shoes

Over 1000 of Santa Clarita’s finest track/field athletes are beginning there 2007 Track/Field season.  Athletes range in age from of 5 to 18 years old.  Track groups include the Warriors, Storm, Phenom and schools like Saugus High, Canyon High, Hart High, Valencia High, West Ranch High, Golden Valley High, College of the Canyons, Master’s College and various junior high schools.  These athletes take pride in preparing for their sport.

The Pro Golf Difference

The Pro Golf Difference

Golf is perhaps the most analytically challenging sport of all.  Up until recently, a player seeking instruction was often subjected to as many opinions as instructors.  However, now with the advancement of technology, instructors can apply a scientific approach to improving their student’s game.

Real Men do Yoga!

Real Men do Yoga!

When I walked into Hot Yoga Valencia for the first time 14 months ago, I carried a lot of anxiety and doubt.  I wasn’t at my best and being a natural perfectionist didn’t help.  I was 6 foot 3 inches, 255 pounds fat and doubled over in pain.  It was probably the last place I wanted to be, but after seeing a chiropractor nearly every day for two weeks, I was running out of options fast.

Men are invited to Goddess Fitness!

Men are invited to Goddess Fitness!

I have never really been into Fitness.  I smoked for 22 years and I was not into sports.  I ate junk food and I never danced at parties.  My wife is the dancer and owner of Goddess Fitness, so when when I saw the changes in her health, I quit smoking and decided to not gain weight.  I decided to be the one to lose weight after quitting.  So she dragged me to the Couples Yoga class.

Traditional Kung Fu Improves Every Aspect of Life

Traditional Kung Fu Improves Every Aspect of Life

The original Kung Fu artists trained because if they didn’t they would perish in battle.  They worked hard day and night.  They had to be in the moment, when in battle, because being distracted by stress or fear meant sure disaster.  They had superb combat skills, but also something more.  They had changed their lives through their Kung Fu training.  They had clarity of mind and relaxation in their lives.  They lead confident lives knowing they had done all they could do to train themselves, in their art. They had no control over unknown situations, so there was no reason to worry.

Six Sneaky Ways To Lose Weight

Six Sneaky Ways To Lose Weight

You’re tired, hungry, you worked late, got stuck in traffic and the last thing on your mind is exercising and eating something that’s good for you, right?  So, as usual, you grab dinner from a fast food restaurant, plop down on the couch and watch your favorite TV show while those tasty morsels build extra inches around your waist and put a choke hold on your arteries.

Keep Moving Forward

Keep Moving Forward

The New Year celebrations have come and gone and the holidays have faded into the past.  By now you are back into the routine of work and daily living without vacations, packages and get-togethers to worry about or look forward to.  But the lasting effects of those indulgent days may still be present, perhaps a little extra weight?  So it may be a good time to take some stock of things before you get too deep into this New Year.  How many resolutions did you make and how many have you kept?

Fitness with a Friend Pays Big Dividends!

Fitness with a Friend Pays Big Dividends!

Physicians say it’s good for the body, therapists say it’s good for the mind and soul.  “It’s the best thing we’ve ever done for our marriage and it’s cheaper than a therapist,” says Melanie Hunter, resident of Valencia.  Just what is she referring to you ask?  Massage?  Yoga?  Meditation?    Melanie is talking about good ole’ exercise, but with the one she loves — her husband.

Make a Commitment to Yourself and Change Your Life Forever!

So it’s that time again when one considers whether to make a New Year’s resolution on losing weight and exercising more.  Assuming you commit to a resolution of becoming healthy, then there is the question of how you go about accomplishing this without it becoming another year of not fulfilling your resolution.

Pilates and Pregnancy

Pilates and Pregnancy

A friend of mine recently did a half-marathon.  She was 8 months pregnant.  She is also a Pilates instructor.  She had a picture-perfect pregnancy.  When I was 8 months pregnant I was crippled with sciatic pain.  I missed so many doctors appointments that my doctor refused to see me anymore.  Unfortunately, I didn’t discover Pilates until my son was 3-years-old.
