Going Beyond Figurines

Going Beyond Figurines

There are so many great figurines to paint at a pottery painting studio.  Selections from legendary figurines like fairies and dragons to animal figurines like puppies and bunnies are endless.  Painting a bunny to look like a chocolate bunny or painting a dog that looks like the one you own can be so much fun.  But beyond owning a collection of dolphins, turtles and cats, one can venture into painting a dinner set, mug set or items for the bathroom.

Getting Students Ready for School

Getting Students Ready for School

As summer vacation comes to a close, it is important that we begin to focus our attention on the upcoming school year.  While many children, and even some adults, do not want to see summer end, it is important that we face this time with a positive attitude and one that lets our children know we have great expectations for the year that is about to begin.  If your child is experiencing difficulties in school, it is even more crucial to begin the year on a positive note.

The Importance of Pre-School

The Importance of Pre-School

Most medical professionals, as well as educators, agree that children between the ages of three and five need pre-school exposure.  This is a crucial period in a child’s education and development.  Pre-school will help lay the foundation for academics, social interaction skills, as well as building self esteem and self confidence.

Kindred Spirits at the Gentle Barn

Kindred Spirits at the Gentle Barn

We had a group of kids at risk come to the Gentle Barn for our peace enhancement program.  All the children were excited about being outdoors with the animals and gathered around us for our presentation.  All except one boy, named Billy, who would not participate.  He would not look at us and his arms were folded defensively across his chest.  You could almost see the anger oozing out of him.

Stretching, Flexibility and Swimming

Stretching, Flexibility and Swimming

There is much emphasis on cardiovascular training and muscle strength, but there is a third, often overlooked, part of a good exercise program – flexibility.

Flexibility reduces risk of injury, releases muscle tension, minimizes soreness, allows greater freedom of movement, increases physical and mental relaxation, and improves posture.  Flexibility improves with regular training.

What Is Special Education?

What Is Special Education?

Special education is a program of learning for students whose needs cannot appropriately be met solely in the general education setting.  A student qualifies for special services after an assessment has been performed and a team of educators and parents determines how to most appropriately educate the child.  Once these team members develop the plan, the student is officially in special education.

Safety Tips for Active Kids

Safety Tips for Active Kids

Never go running alone, no matter where you live.  The reasons for this rule are endless.  Find yourself a running buddy or someone who will ride a bicycle at your side.  When you start running, keep your total distance at or below three miles each time.  If you’re doing a round-trip run, then choose a turn-around point that’s no further than a mile and a half away.  Since you’re still growing, your bones and joints are different from an adult’s and longer distances could work against you.  There will be plenty of time to train for marathons when you’re older.

The Anti-Bully Tool Kit

The Anti-Bully Tool Kit

When one hears the word bully, a specific image comes to mind.  A tough and mean student, who teases, harasses and pushes around a more vulnerable peer.  Everyone has experienced bullying to some degree, whether as a perpetrator, a victim or a bystander.  Bullying unnecessarily traumatizes millions of children and adolescents every year.

Finding The Best Acting Class Or Coach Without Losing Your Wallet

Finding The Best Acting Class Or Coach Without Losing Your Wallet

After receiving an overwhelming response from last month’s editorial, I have decided to include several more warnings that can save you time and money when you begin your search for an acting class or coach that fits the needs of you and your children.  Again, I have heard countless horror stories of actors and their parents paying thousands and thousands of dollars for acting schools, out-of-state Model and Talent Expos, headshot photographers and casting workshops.  It’s time we all got informed.  Here are a couple more things to watch out for:

Choosing A Summer Camp Excellence

Choosing A Summer Camp Excellence

As we welcome a new summer to the Santa Clarita Valley, our thoughts naturally turn to what we can do this year to provide the greatest summer camp for our child.  For more than 23 years, Sunshine has provided a dynamic, yet safe summer program for many children in the SCV community.  This year is no exception.  In fact, Sunshine has revamped our summer program to provide an even greater summer experience for your child.  Simply put, this year’s summer camp is second to none.

Learning Should Begin At Home

Learning Should Begin At Home

These days, parents seem to argue back and forth over the right type of education for their kids.  Should they go to public school, private school, Montessori or should they home school?  They weigh the pros and cons and try to convince their friends and family members that their way is the right way.  But at the end of the day, what really matters is the parent’s involvement in their child’s education.

Prepare Now For A Massively Successful School Year

Prepare Now For A Massively Successful School Year

Can you believe it’s already the middle of summer?  This is what our kids wait for all year long.  The opportunity to do what they do best by being a kid and having fun.  Unfortunately, many kids don’t have the same sentiments about school and learning.  There are many reasons for this, but mainly it is because their experience of school conflicts with everything that matters about being a kid.
